Today at #jsm2024, we heard from Anirban Chetia and @healthandstats about data.table, in the session on Big In-Memory Data in R.
Such a great discussion with a very knowlegeable crowd, led by the one and only @michaelchirico !

#jsm2024 my “plans” for today:
8:30 Modern Statistical Inference
10:30 Data-Informed Policymaking: Statisticians and Data Scientists Building & Communicating Evidence
2 posters!
4 Deming Lecture
5:30 Joint Computing and Graphics Section Mixer
6p women’s caucus mixerWhew! Hope to make some friends! I’ll be the one with the purple hair and the mask. Oh right, and today is dinosaur dress day

Loving this framing of where Data Science "sits" among other disciplinesz
(from: Brianna Heggeseth at Macalaster, couldn't find her on here)

Random idea germinating during #jsm2024 StatEd talks:
What if we scored student work like Olympic gymnastics, with a separate "difficulty" and "execution" score?
I feel like the standard "points off for some thing wrong" grading style discourages trying newer or more complex things, especially in coding.
I would love to see the student who *mostly* executes a deeper analysis get a better grade than one who *perfectly* excutes a very basic one.
Has anyone tried something like this? 🤔

ok #jsm2024 here's my plan for today
2-4 Advances in Stochastic Models for Events
4-6 Computational methods for massive functional data
8:30-10:30 Opening Mixerposting now because I'm about to be busy until things get started.
I have some ideas for where to go to dinner. ping me if you want suggestions or want to co-coordinate something!
