  1. I think I told the story of the ex-pro boxer who came to the first lesson of the free #JSL course and was SHOCKED to learn that JSL was not simply learning the Japanese equivalent of the sign alphabet and then just spelling out Japanese. It reminded me of the old Steve Martin joke, "It's like those French have a different word for everything!" JSL has a different grammar than Japanese, and, yes, they have a different sign for everything. That boxer never came back after that first lesson.

  2. Yesterday I had a chance to use my very limited Japanese Sign Language for the first time in two or three years. A woman with two very young girls boarded the subway and I immediately noted that the more lively girl had cochlear implants. She was vocalizing very well (and very loudly), and her mother responded to the girl in #JSL. I realized that all three were #Deaf. (Few hearing parents of Deaf children bother to learn JSL, and even if they do, they aren't fluent like this woman was.) cont.↓

  10. Before I forget - what is the situation for #JSOL in Japan these days?

JSOL = Japanese for Speakers of Other Languages. I'm not sure what they really call it in Japan.

When I was there, non-Japanese speaking elementary students all had one class once a month at an elementary school - not their home school, necessarily.

Surely the situation has to be better than that by now?
