Reading Jesse's Pitchfork piece on Bobby gave me a way of thinking about the Dead I hadn't really considered, though it's completely obvious in retrospect.
Spent the whole Saturday JRAD show watching through this lens and it's quite clear that in that band Tom is the Bobby and Scott is the Jerry even though they sing the opposite's songs (and despite the fact that Tom sincerely believes himself to be the Jerry of the band).

Set closing Throwing Stones had a jam that was giving off 8/4/15 heavy metal Weekapaug vibes. What a set!!! #JRAD

A slick as hell -> into Playing which featured the entire band dropping out except Marco and Russo for a full-blown gospel jam (!!!) that had me feeling like I was back at Jazzfest in the Gospel Tent. 35 minutes of fire to open this second set. #jRAD

Marco just played a 2-chord quarter note pattern during that Estimated that he repeated for maybe 16 bars which meant the beat kept turning around because it's in 7 and for a brief moment I think I loved him as much as @[email protected] does 🤣 #JRAD
