  1. Album Recommendations – October 2026

I’ve given up on trying to regularly write reviews of new albums, but I still want to share albums I enjoyed.  Below are several new (and new-ish) albums – no ratings, no criticism – just music I enjoy listening to and hope you will too.

    Album: From Kolkata to Dublin
Artist: Cedar Dobson and Debojyoti Sanyal
    Genre: Traditional Music
    Release Date: March 23, 2026
    Label: Cedar Dobson Music
    Favorite Tracks:

    • Harvest Home
    • Toss the Feathers
    • Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór

I’m a sucker for cultural exchange in music, and this album is a simple blend of Irish trad and Indian classical music which proves that tin whistles and tabla just sound good together.

    Album: Perennial
    Artist: Modernism
    Genre: Art Punk
    Release Date: September 18, 2026
    Label: Ernest Jenning Record Co.
    Favorite Tracks:

    • Modernism
    • The Beat Scene
    • Baby, Are You Abstract?

Perennial are an experimental retro-punk outfit who originated in Connecticut.  Modernism is a 9-song collection of short, catchy, dance-punk explosions.

    Album: Violins
    Artist: Blondshell
    Genre: Indie Rock
    Release Date: September 25, 2026
    Label: Partisan Records
    Favorite Tracks:

    • Heart Has to Work So Hard
    • Lucky
    • Stone Fruit
    • New Age Trojan Horse
    • Fur Elise

Blondshell (a.k.a. Sabrina Teitelbaum) is a Panorama of the Mountains favorite, returning with a follow-up to last year’s If You Asked for a Picture.

Album: Hope is a Heavy Thing
    Artist: Joy Oladokun
    Genre: Folk
    Release Date: September 24, 2026
    Label: Concord Records
    Favorite Tracks:

    • Raised by Radio (A Reintroduction)
    • TOGIAIM
    • Toothache
    • Don’t Call Me Baby!
    • Die Young
    • Time Is a River

Singer/songwriter Joy Oladokun’s sixth album continues her tradition of literary lyrics that speak to the heart of the matter.

    Album: Little Storms
Artist: Ethan Setiawan & Fine Ground
    Genre: Bluegrass
    Release Date: October 2, 2026
    Label: Adhyâropa Records
    Favorite Tracks:

    • The Harbor Walk
    • Whiskey, Boys
    • Ships at Sea
    • Across the Great Divide

Despite being far from Appalachia and not particularly mountainous, the greater Boston area features an excellent contemporary bluegrass scene.  This now includes the quintet Fine Ground lead by mandolin virtuoso Ethan Setiawan on their debut album.

  2. How we’re avoiding the start of “Monterey Car Week” traffic this eve.

Hard to say whether it was the bike ride, the music now cranked up, or the edible flowers that perked us up and gave our weary self the energy needed to fix supper now. All are such a boost to our well being!

  3. I saw God out on the block today
He was darker than the preachers say
With a teardrop tattooed on his face
    And dirt on his fingers
I heard angels when he laughed the way
That people do when they have known true pain
For his sins I don't know who's to blame
    What choice was he givin'?
In this world that we're livin'

    When I see you
    I see love
    I see America
    I feel your pain
    I share your blood
    I see America

  4. Joy writes music like in the way that Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom writes prose:

"... if you can make something beautiful enough to read, beautiful enough to engage with, if it is rhythmic, if it is poetic, if the prose affects people, I find that they can slip into having a difficult learning experience without realizing it.

And once people are in that space, human nature really does want to usually figure it out. But you have to get people to the space of safe curiosity.”

  5. #joyoladokun has a new single coming out Friday called "Zombie"

"'zombie' is about how easy it is to feel stuck and lonely in the age of information overload. it’s the first chapter of new music from my upcoming album."

Apparently TikTok is the place she's releasing teasers - I don't have an account there, but was at least able to watch this without one.

It's your typical Joy song - so beautiful and so bloody hard at the same time.

  6. Yesterday #joyoladokun released a new single.

I highly recommend listening, it's a song for the time.

    Don’t take it heavy
    On your good shoulders
We circle back round the sun every day
    Don’t take it on you
    It’s just the cold truth
    Nothing comes easy
    Except for pain

  7. This is Chaos:

    #miniaussie #dogsofmastodon #chaosaussiesauce

He adopted me March of 2025 - and his name comes from the chorus of a #joyoladokun song.

  8. Originally an indie folk artist focused on ballads, Joy Oladokun has been adopting elements of rock, gospel and soul, expanding her sound and her reach in the process.

  9. Musical Interlude: This song came into my head today and wouldn't leave until I paid it some attention. Not someone I listen to regularly, but it plays on a local college station a lot, and it IS a damn nice tune. Something to listen to while spending time with a loved one.

"Purple Haze," performed by Joy Oladokun.
