  3. It's my birthday!

I woke up an hour or so ago and was filled with so much grateful to be alive.

I knew I needed to do something with that gratitude, to share it as my post for today.

I looked through all the blog posts I've written over the years, and this one filled me with joy, so I rewrote it with my list for today.

I hope it inspires you to write your own list!

  5. For my first Blaugust post, I wrote about a journalling prompt that I use to help me with interoception and emotional regulation, inspired by the UI of The Sims 4. It's for when you just kind of Feel Bad but are having a hard time untangling the reasons why you feel bad and figuring out what to do about it.

  7. I have always had bad handwriting but it has gotten better over the past couple of years by simply journaling. This week, inspired by [Neal Stephenson's post](nealstephenson.substack.com/p/) I bought a cheap-ish fountain pen. Writing with it is a different world

Never in my life would I have thought I would care about such things, but here I am.

  11. Fern 🪴 v1.5.0 is born! 💖 It brings Keybinding "presets" for many of the major text editor families. Now, you can switch to a preset "base layer" for #Vim, #Emacs, #Helix and #VSCode (ie. GUI-like editors. Called it 'arrows'. Sorry, not sorry. lmao). Custom keybindings in your config file take precedence and are layered over the base presets.

    Big thanks to
@[email protected] for their feedback that lead to the idea and gave me the motivation to crank on it!

Looking to add some color to my daily #journalling - what do you recommend? Currently I use A5 notebook & black pens

Colored pens? Oil crayons? Colored pencils? Other ideas?

If you've got something that works great for you, please share - pictures & inspiration would be great to see.

  19. Second year of keeping a #diary:
    - going all in on the ring binding system, including getting the overpriced puncher was the right choice. I know from the past already that enriching the diary by taping or gluing stuff in just doesn't work for me. Punch a hole in it and clip it in works perfectly. I think without the puncher I wouldn't like it half as much.
    - self design & print also 👍
    - frequency and monthly reviews have room for improvement.

  23. By the way: a few days ago I finally finished my custom traveller's notebook cover / wallet!

All in all I'm very happy with how it turned out. There are a few things I might adjust or do differently for a V2. For example, the money compartment could be a little wider and attaching bias tape straight is harder than I thought.

I'll have to tinker with the closing mechanism: in theory, there are magnets and ferrofoil in there, but although I tested it and thought it should work, in practice the adhesion through the two layers of leather is so weak that you barely notice it :( Maybe I'll try bigger magnets or a magnetic button.

But still, most things work just as planned in real usage and the aesthetics work as I hoped! I enjoyed working with this cork leather a lot (sadly the shop I got it from closed down, so I'll have to look somewhere else for fuzure projects).

The hardest thing for me about this project was serial decision paralysis. Since I planned this all by myself from scratch, every single measurement and design was a decision I had to figure out. Which was especially hard to do starting from a blank page. For my next project I'll probably do something guided with a pattern to recuperate :D

If and when I'll find the time, I'll sort out and upload my plans, in case anyone wants to make something similar themselves :D

  27. So, over the last few years, I've been preparing a journalling #RPG that I have recently become obsessed with all over again.

It's called The Game for Scribes and it is a tarot-driven RPG for one (with optional multiplayer rules) that puts you in the shoes of the ruler of a small medieval-fantasy domain and the chronicaller who keeps the history. The game guides you through turns comprising years, each turn adding a brick to the wall of narrative that helps drive your journalling efforts (or even the background activity of your TTRPG campaign).

I've been periodically streaming gameplay and #journalling from the game on my twitch channel here, including the journaling process in a book I bound' with my own hands.

(Posting this #selfpromo post from Patch this week because my main writerly instance doesn't support markdown or this post length)

  29. I read somewhere that back in ye olden days, people didn't write their journals and diaries in prose like we're "supposed" to do nowadays. They'd just have bullet points, like:

    - Got married today
    - Had a baby
    - Moved across the country

This is the strategy that finally got me to journal consistently. I'll expand into feelings and speculation and philosophical whatever when I feel like it, but removing that pressure made it so much easier...

  30. I finished my five year journal! (Sort of. I finished it based on the dates it has, but I'm still writing in it. :ablobgiggle:)

  35. I'm a strong believer in starting New Year's resolutions early: Yesterday, I began #journalling with a daily, handwritten journal. At the moment, each entry is simple bulletin points, but I'm sure the format is going to evolve into something a lot messier and less rigid! #AmWriting #Writing

  36. This month I've been making international online pals with crafters who livestream on YouTube.

It's a new world for me but the community has been very friendly and helpful so far. They even asked about my writer friend @andyluke ,
    who also has a channel.

If anyone is looking for online chat over card making and junk journals, I'd be happy to point you in their direction.
