So I have a small pile of lithium-ion cells sitting beside me, freshly charged. From the count of cells, their rated capacity in amp-hours, and the nominal voltage of 3.7V, I calculate the stored energy as being close to 850,000 #joules.
One megajoule - only 17% larger - is described in Wikipedia as the amount of #kinetic #energy of a one-tonne mass moving at 161 km/h [1]. It's also traditionally described as approximating one 190g stick of #dynamite.
[1] Despite specifying the mass in metric tonnes, they give this velocity as "100 mph" primarily, thus displaying a Canadian-like schizoid approach to #unit systems.

Quite irritated at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yd18q248jo and its use of #Watts. While Watts are a useful way of talking about batteries - you need to know how fast they can charge and discharge - it is at least as important to know how much they can store, and that's measured in #Joules. #Power and #Energy are not the same thing, #BBC! "The Devilla site will take the company's storage capacity up to 1.5GW" is nonsense.

As a back-of-the-envelope calculation, that is 1000 horsepower for an hour. In other words, run a muscle car at full power for an hour.Another rough calculation puts 4 gigajoules as the equivalent of burning about 30 gallons of gasoline.
These are very rough numbers and I welcome corrections from anyone who knows what they are doing.

High Street retailer #Joules has said it is set to go into administration, blaming soaring energy costs and a downturn in consumer spending.
The chain has 132 stores across the UK, including five in South West Wales at #Mumbles, #Carmarthen, #Tenby and St Davids in #Pembrokeshire and McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in #Bridgend.
