  1. Today is Rizal Day, a public holiday in the #Philippines 🇵🇭 honoring the martyrdom of national hero #JoséRizal. Rizal was executed on 30 December 1896 after being charged for sedition and rebellion against the Spanish colonial government.

As a simple token, here is a photo I took in 2017 of a historical marker installed by the Philippines’ national historical agency in Berlin at the site where Rizal stayed while writing his first novel, Noli Me Tangere.

  2. 127 years ago today, #Freemason #Filipino-Chinese Dr. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, was executed by #Spain's #Spanish overlords, and Roman #Catholic Church priests, in the #Philippines.

On December 30, 1896, he was walked from his prison in #Intramuros to Bagumbayan (later called: #Luneta and then #RizalPark) in #Manila. It's more or less 2 km by [modern] road.

The main/primary monument for Rizal is located 100m SSE of where he was shot by the #Spaniards.

  3. #30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 1️⃣4️⃣: #Europe 🌍

For today’s theme, here are the locations with photos of all known and extant #HistoricalMarkers (aka commemorative plaques) found in Europe that were created by the National Historical Commission of the #Philippines (#NHCP). It turns out that these are all related to our national hero José Rizal since he traveled extensively in Europe.

(I was fortunate enough to visit the 2 markers in Germany and would love to visit the rest!)

  4. #MappyMondays!

Because today is the 162nd birthday of the #Philippines’ national hero José Rizal, here’s a map of all the 39 extant National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) historical markers related to Rizal all over the world that we know of that we have added in @wikidata along with photos of 35 of them uploaded in #WikimediaCommons.

You can play around with the Wikidata query I used to generate the map and the image grid here: w.wiki/6r8F

  5. PANCITERIA MACANISTA DEL BUEN GUSTO [Philippines 1880]
I learned about the place from Jośe Rizal's book "El Filibusterismo". But how sad the place is really ruined. It ended with some aluminum on the windows and gate to avoid drugs addicts use the place as a bunker or at least that's what I've read from somewhere on the net. I'm not sure if still standing today. Sad...

  11. @Aslanmane
I was* hoping to join a long ride this Sunday with a group of #foldie #cyclists. It's their yearly #Tomb2Womb ride -- from where our national hero #JoseRizal died to where he was born. I felt like I could do it even though it's 60kms each way. My problem was #cycling to the meeting spot @ Kilometer Zero in #Manila -- it's a long way and i didn't feel safe cycling alone. I asked the group of there's anyone i could ride with from my city to Manila. Nobody. 🙁 So i got lazy.
