An unnecessary fear.
As with every novel, when reading a Mann novel one just has to suspend disbelief and follow it through. Once you accept that, you are fine.
The Magic Mountain, Doctor Faustus, Lotte in Weimar, each of these perfòrms absolute literary magic, and you will enjoy the journey.
These are "late Thomas Mann" books. They define our era. The earlier works: masterful but historical, no need to worry about them.
But these three books: they are alive now, burning hot.
(As is every single Conrad novel.)

"The Shadow Line" (1917) in my view is the second-greatest book ever written. (The first, of course, being The Magic Mountain, published just 7 years later but distinctly in a different era. Conrad is "transition to modernism", Mann is modernism.)

German as the language of mathematics.
It allows for long composite words, which still have some concrete, tangible meaning. Its sentences can be complex yet they remain intuitive. And the mature writer can throw in concrete everyday notions, slang, to give added meaning to an abstract concept.
van der Waerden is a master of all of these.
(I live, work and write in English, and I love English and its writers with all my heart. Interestingly, my favourite English novelist is Joseph Conrad, whose native language was Polish.

Been listening to #ColumMcCann perform his novel #Twist.
And I hear in interviews that he sees it relating to #JosephConrad's #TheHeartOfDarkness.
And I find that I've somehow missed that The Heart of Darkness is set in the horror of the #BelgianCongo genocides.
So next to listen to Conrad's book.

Y'all I speak French very well, even if I have a Joseph Conrad level accent. But I had a difficult moment tonight over the word découvrir. Apparently that means you can ask questions. To me, it just meant find out, when used as a command in French. Cue more you know star,I guess. But this actually caused some friction tonight.
