Even as one with little truck for religion, gods, and the Catholic Church specifically, Francis struck me as an exceptional pope. A few years back on Reddit I'd posted the results of researching a century or two's worth of popes, and there wasn't anyone remotely comparable in a substantive focus on the poor and underprivileged at least through the late 19th century (Leo XIII (1878--1903), in the encyclical Rerum novarum), and so far as I could tell not for many centuries before that.
And as I've come to realise since, also a bulwark against the authoritarian trend in many countries around the world.
The timing is exceedingly poignant of course.
