The Mandalorian And Grogu – La Recensione
Sono passati diversi anni da quando la trilogia sequel si è conclusa con tutte le critiche che si è portata appresso (alcune giuste, altre decisamente meno). Da allora, Star Wars ha campato sullo streaming e sulle serie tv (anche qui: alcune riuscite, altre no). L’arrivo al cinema di un nuovo film sembra un miraggio e per farlo si è puntato su un derivato dello streaming: mossa giusta?
Beh… Parliamone.
Lo dico subito: a me è piaciuto pur con più di un problema nella struttura, ma bisogna anche smetterla di pretendere che ogni Star Wars sia profondo, con un’aura mistica ed intoccabile perchè è questo atteggiamento che ha contribuito ad affossare il progetto degli spin-off visto come era stato accolto Solo (un film che Ron Howard ha salvato dall’essere peggio delle fogne di Calcutta).
Il problema principale è che questo film non doveva esistere. Doveva esserci una nuova stagione di The Mandalorian ma i responsabili di Star Wars (e no, non è la Kennedy a cui mi riferisco) hanno deciso di cambiare e farne un film.
Che siano più episodi compressi per fare una pellicola unica, lo si nota soprattuto nella parte centrale dove Grogu si occupa di Mando affinchè guarisca: zero dialoghi (o quasi), tutto basato sulla pucciosità: quello che sarebbe (praticamente) un filler in una serie tv.
Ma le 2 estremità, quello che vien prima e quel che vien dopo, sono buone. Non è un film evento, ci mancherebbe altro ed infatti di pubblicità in rete ne ho vista poca (rispetto alle aspettive), ma come dico sempre: se alla fine del film non dici “Ecco, 10 euro buttati” ed esci che comunque sei contento, va benissimo. E, per essere onesti, io ho pagato 9 euro e 50 (di cui uno di prenotazione).
Parliamo di quello che funziona, intanto.
Visivamente non ci sono pecche grossolane. C’è un forte richiamo al sud est asiatico, diciamo un po’ di Vietnam, Singapore, Malesia… quel clima anche stereotipato se vogliamo, da posti malfamati, crimine ed illegalità senza sosta, tipo (citando una pubblicità) “peggiori bar di Caracas” anche.
Un’atmosfera che ben si adatta ad un cacciatore di taglie che deve scovare gli ex imperiali che da gerarchi si sono reinventati signori del crimine.
Un po’ come dopo la seconda guerra mondiale certi elementi mitteleuropei sono finiti in Sud America o negli USA (ma qui a fare gli scienziati e pagati dal governo: operazione Paperclip).
Così dopo aver visto Mando cercare di catturare un primo ex imperiale (che però salta in aria nel tentare la fuga), ecco che lo vediamo accettare controvoglia di compiere una missione per conto dei gemelli Hutt, che giova ricordare sono dei criminali come lo era Jabba: accetta solo perchè hanno informazione su Coin, un imperiale di alto livello di cui nessuno conosce il volto (e per alcuni è pure morto), in cambio deve solo trovare e riportare a casa Rotta The Hutt, rapito quando era piccolo.
Che zii amorevoli, eh? Peccato che le cose siano leggermente diverse in quanto non solo Rotta è il campione dei lottatori, a cui manca una vittoria per la libertà, gestito da Lord Janu, signore del crimine su Shakari: sa benissimo che gli amorevoli zii lo vogliono morto.
E così il tentativo di liberarlo fallisce due volte: la prima cercando di pagare Janu e la seconda cercando di farlo evadere, anche perchè Rotta allerta le guardie che catturano così Mando. Col risultato che Lord Janu ottiene quel che voleva, ovvero far lottare Mando nell’arena, sperando magari che uccida Rotta: Mando però dopo un po’ di lotta seria in cui ha comunque la meglio dichiara la sua resa, rendendo Rotta libero… ma dando il via al voltafaccia di Janu che manda in scena quello che era il suo piano originale, ovvero farlo attaccare da più mostri: insomma, in un modo o nell’altro, Rotta deve morire secondo Janu (e come Mando aveva detto che sarebbe successo, senza esser creduto).
Momento caotico, mega rissone in cui Rotta capisce che il pubblico che tanto lo acclamava e che lui credeva dalla sua parte in realtà non lo è. Non è che lo odi per le sue origini familiari però (da cui cerca di liberarsi): il pubblico vuole solo violenza, non gli importa altro. Una degenerazione degli incontri nelle arene, in qualunque forma li si pensi (a me ha fatto venire in mente Lionheart con Jean Claude Van Damme).
Nel caos ovviamente Janu scappa, i mostri si scatenano per la città dopo che le protezione dell’arena sono saltate, Rotta tenta a sua volta la fuga ma senza successo: mentre si preparano (Mando ed il fido Zeb che lo affianca in missione) per portarlo a casa, Mando rivela cosa c’è in ballo… e capisce che qualcuno sta giocando su più tavoli perchè, come rivela Rotta, Janu è proprio Coin. I gemelli avevano organizzato tutto per toglier di mezzo il nipote, espandersi su Shakari senza più Janu e pure eliminare Mando.
Quanto succede dopo è molto semplice e prevedibile: al comando sono contenti ma mettono in guardia Mando che gli Hutt vorranno vendicarsi. E infatti poco dopo ecco che mentre è su Nevarro a riposare e dopo aver mandato lontano Rotta, viene attaccato da un mercenario, Embo, che riesce a rapirlo: scopriremo che la nave che trasportava Rotta è stata a sua volta intercettata ed entrambi sono condannati a morte dai gemelli sul loro pianeta: Rotta per tortura, Mando costretto ad affrontare un serpentone gigante (che lo ferirà e questo ci porta alla fase “Baby Yoda Show”).
Una volta guarito, ecco che è il momento di sistamare i conti una volta per tutte: sul pianeta arrivano i nostri, allertati dagli Anzelliani (che avevano seguito il rapimento ed aiutato con Grogu nella fuga dal serpentone prima del ritorno alla base) ed i palazzo degli Hutt viene raso al suolo, prima però… i gemelli diventano un spuntino per il serpentone (con Rotta che liberato da Grogu, si mette in pericolo)
E tutto si risolve per il meglio, visto che Janu diventa un pentito e Rotta continua la sua strada nell’affrancarsi dall’ombra del padre decidendo di aiutare la Nuova Repubblica.
Tutto molto semplice e lineare alla fine, pure prevedibile se vogliamo: ma è esattamente quello che ci si doveva aspettare da questo film. Il fatto che sia semplice non vuole dire che sia brutto, i film (soprattutto certi film) devono essere questo: semplici.
Allegri disse “Semplice, il calcio è molto semplice, non lo rendete complicato che poi vi intortate… Continuate con le vostre teorie che fate bene… Per me il calcio è un’altra roba”.
E aggiungo le parole di Johan Cruijff: “Giocare a calcio è semplice, ma giocare un calcio semplice è la cosa più difficile che ci sia”. Sostituire calcio con cinema e ci siamo.
In conclusione, brevemente:
Cosa Funziona. Un ritmo tutto sommato buono, gli effetti pratici e meno digitali ma soprattutto Sigourney Weaver nel ruolo del comandante Ward, il capo di Mando, in un ruolo classico da Sci-fi (e lei ne sa qualcosa di questi franchise…). Curioso l’uso di Rotta, rimasto sino ad ora sullo sfondo senza una vera collocazione (buono? cattivo? E chi lo sa…) e interessante l’uso di Embo (la cui voce è del produttore Filoni come da tradizione), colui che cattura Mando: hai visto mai che in futuro non si possano scontrare di nuovo? Si tratta di un personaggio noto al fandom e che scenograficamente funziona benissimo (tra lotta e presenza scenica).
Cosa Non Funziona. Come detto, l’effetto filler da serie tv. Ed in parte pure l’affidarsi al fan service con Grogu e certe gag tra lui e gli anzelliani che ai puristi han fatto certamente storcere il naso. Manca anche una storia di più ampio respiro (ma spunti ne dà), magari qualcuno dirà che potevano osare di più: e mandare tutto in fumo? Non credo proprio…
Cosa Sta Nel Mezzo. Nella prima parte Mando sembra quasi Punisher. Non un male, sia chiaro, ma lascia un po’ così. Diciamo un Punisher senza le parolacce. Ed il palazzo degli Hutt: è come ci aspetta da gente come loro… però diciamolo: può provocare il vomito quell’assembramente di vermoni!

Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu (2026) – Review
Never mind the far, far away part, it’s certainly been a long time since the galaxy spanning adventures of Star Wars appeared on the big screen. In fact, it’s been around seven years since The Rise Of Skywalker made its bow and subsequently put the cinematic arm of the franchise in carbon freeze due to its divisive reception. Of course since then the franchise has made the small screen it’s new home, regaling us with more, varied, Star Wars content than you can wave a lightsaber at – but for every Andor, Book Of Boba Fett and Ahsoka series we got, there still was this pang that the franchise wasn’t operating from its natural home: a cinema screen the size of a Star Destroyer.
Well, aiming to change all that is the double team of The Mandalorian & Grogu who are bypassing a fourth season to make the jump to lightspeed to cinemas in a measured and rather safe attempt to bring Star Wars back home. But can even the cute offensive that comes with the world-conquering “Baby Yoda” manage to make the franchise’s big screen come back feel anything more than just an extended episode?When last we left Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his errant adopted son, Grogu, he’d vowed to work for the still-fragile New Republic in a will-hunt-Imperials-for-cash capacity. It seems that the business of fragging remnants of the Empire is pretty good and after racking up another win, Commander Ward sets him up for his next mission. But while the previous search and eliminate jobs have been fairly straightforward (AT-ATs notwithstanding), this one will prove to be a little more complex.
The next warlord that Mando has to find is one named Coin, but the catch is that no one knows what the guy looks like and the only way to score the intel is to do the bidding of the nefarious Hutt Twins. However, for them to play ball and cough up the intel, the Mandalorian and Grogu will have to rescue their nephew, Rotta The Hutt, who is being held by a criminal syndicate.
The reason that Rotta is so valuable is that he’s the son of the late, infamous gangster Jabba The Hutt, but when Djarin arrives on the planet Shakari to perform his rescue mission, he soon discovers that things aren’t what they seem. Before you know it, both he and his adorable green tyke are thrown into a succession series (some might say episodic) of adventures that sees them fight for their lives against a string of foes that are all shapes and sizes. But even if Mando can muscle their way past a disturbingly ripped Rotta, an alien fighting pit, a mysterious bounty hunter with a peculiar line in hat wear and whatever nefarious double cross the Twins presumably have in store, can he possibly guarantee the safety of his little charge and his near-endless appetite for both mischief and snackies?There’s a sense that the knives will be out for The Mandalorian And Grogu no matter how good or bad it ends up being and that’s not just because Star Wars has one of the most hostile fan bases in history. One of the main worries about the show’s transference to the big screen is that the powers that be are playing things way too safe by making the franchise’s belated return to cinemas essentially a feature length episode. Honestly, it’s a fear that proves to be well founded as the hugely episodic and insanely long film is broken up into various sections so distinct you can virtually see where the episode breaks would take place. One minutes our heroes are playing chicken with looming Imperial Walkers on a hostile ice planet, the next Mando is beating all kinds of Bantha scat out of a selection of aliens that look suspiciously familiar if you payed close attention to that iconic chess game in Millennium Falcon back in ’77. From there we get some much needed down time on Nevarro, before a hefty final act sees our title stars embark on yet more action setpieces on Nal Hutta, but if director Jon Favreau and newly minted Star Wars head honcho, Dave Filoni had streamlined their story telling a bit, we could have got a return to Star Wars that could have been twice as effective with only half the effort.
Less problematic, but surely to piss off spoilsports is the fact that The Mandalorian And Grogu fully embraces George Lucas’ repeated insistence that Star Wars is for kids. But while the movie makes good and varied use of its little, doe-eyed sidekick (watching Grogu go native on Nal Hutta and embrace his inner Dagobah to protect his dear old dad is genuinely glorious), it replays the old Grogu-is-hungry joke over and over again. In fact, Favreau may need to get his memory checked, because he also includes multiple instances of Mando trapped in a fighting area and endless sequences of him battling CGI beasties (including Jeremy Allen White’s rather dour Rotta), which add a fairly repetitive feel to the film.However, this is undeniably Star Wars and despite all the issues I had with this glorified, extended episode, there’s nothing else that engages your inner twelve year old faster than spending time in this world. Yes, Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin (or, should I say, his masked suit performer) is in desperate need of a proper character arc, but it’s more than made up by the fact that we’re watching little Grogu slowly mature in front of our very eyes. In fact, while supporters of the hyper realistic politics of Andor may be disgruntled that the main character of the film is a little green baby, but Favreau is definitely shooting for the adventure aspects of the franchise and you certainly get your money’s worth. Also, while easter eggs from various eras fly at you thick and fast (prepare to weather an assault of lesser used creatures, vehicles and characters that’ll have super nerds repeatedly jabbing their digits at the screen – hi Embo), composer Ludwig Göransson goes all out to provide a score that frequently expands what a Star Wars soundtrack can be.
Whether this heralds a new and sustained cinematic run of Star Wars movies will remain to be seen, after all no one can hamstring Star Wars more decisively than Star Wars fans, but for all it’s faults, The Mandalorian And Grogu does frequently provide the exact kind of thrills that only a galaxy far, far away can provide. Yes, it’s skewed young – despite featuring a surprising amount of graphic immolations – but when baby Grogu is allowed to cook, its impossible not to still be utterly enthralled at the little fella while the puppeteers breathing life into him are working overtime. And if that doesn’t impress you, how about a Phil Tippett stop-motion sequence or the sight of Sigourney Weaver flying an X-Wing?It may be more Solo than Rogue One, but that doesn’t mean that the big screen bow of The Mandalorian And Grogu fails to deliver. In fact, when judged purely on the familiarity of the franchise, there’s enough here to make you thrilled to be back in a universe of twanging laser blasts and iconic aliens. However, anyone looking for anything deeper than high flying, rollicking adventure may find matters are about as deep as a puddle on Tatooine and if Star Wars manages to get a big screen reprieve it so badly deserves, it needs to get a little more daring than this.
