Calm your dog! (Sound up)

You know how you can see that an excited dog has calmed down and lowered its tension level when it yawns? The trick is to drop that level of tension. It turns out that you can do this by getting the dog to yawn, first. It seems strange but it works! We do it by example, (by demonstrating an exaggerated yawn, complete with sound effects, ourselves) and the power of suggestion! It works every time. She's immediately relaxed. Who would have thought! Try it with yours!
The side effect is that I'm now completely relaxed myself.

Is the fediverse ready for this much solemnity (and cuteness) in a puppy? On a Friday? I think so!

Joni was about 7 weeks old when I took this portrait of her. It looks like it should be framed in a gilt frame and hung on the walls of a staircase in an ancestral home.

*If this looks familiar, I shared it last year on Pixelfed, so those following me there might have seen it. No apologies. We need more puppy cuteness in the world.

It's hard to believe that our lovely, wonderful (second) Joni died 6 months after this was taken (2013). She was such a great dog. She loved to run with me in the snow, just as this present Joni does.

Dogs are amazing.

I know that's something most of us agree on.

Here is Joni, 12 years old, a Border Collie, and the least well behaved dog who's ever lived with us. She is beloved of Zaz who will be devastated when she goes.

One of her more annoying habits is to bark constantly while I'm making supper. Or vacuuming. Or snow is being cleared. Or any time, really.

The other day when she was doing just that. I said to her "stop barking and play the 'hide the blue ball' game." In that game one of us hides her blue ball in the kitchen and she tries (or if she's hidden it, I pretend to try) to find it.

She stopped barking, went straight for the blue ball and 'hid' it in the cupboard, standing in front of it as a clue for me to ask her where it was then to praise her lavishly when she 'found' it, which I did, of course.

I was pretty impressed. Steven was also as he was there. Fluke?

Last night the same barking for nothing was going on, but this time I said in a rather conversational tone (barely over the din) "why don't you stop barking and play hide the blue ball instead?" She stopped and picked up her blue ball and did exactly as I had suggested.

Not a fluke. They know so much more than they let on.

Zaz: Do you ever get the feeling you're being watched?

After her beauty sleep and a little hemp milk in a saucer (hemp milk is her favourite drink) Zaz suddenly became aware that she was already being watched. And there's nothing quite like the focus of a border collie who adores you.

Zaz says hello to all her fellow felines including her #teamTabby team mates Pax, Ripley and Jonesy!

Joni and the First Blue Ball
It’s a day for a puppy photograph. Thinking about it, though, most days are good days to see a puppy pic. This was Joni when she was about 10 weeks old, with her first blue ball. She was a terrible chewer, as you can see, and was on her way to destroying this, but was able to spare a few seconds to glance up at me. Have a lovely day, friends.

WOT? No frisbee?

Some young dogs are so demanding. There is never enough playtime to completely satisfy a border collie. This was taken when Joni was 4 months old and we used to tease her that she had a broken ear.

I think I must be trying to make myself feel better about approaching winter. Joni loves walks on the beach in the winter and I admit that I do as well, when I can push myself to go there. She looks a bit miserable here, though, probably because it was over and we were on the way home.

Preparing for the storm

Joni has her own pack to carry, with her food (and the food for the cats, but don't tell her), collapsible food bowl, papers and, on the top, to be added at the last minute in a net, her blue ball. She's a great help in emergencies.

Joni and the Sheep

Years ago we took Joni on a few sheep herding sessions to see how she would take to it. As you see, she enjoyed it. We didn't continue with the lessons, though, deciding to stick with frisbees and balls instead. And now she herds cats, which is much more of a challenge. And she can do it in the house.

This was Joni 2, our first border collie, second Joni. Make sense of that if you will. She was a special dog, kinder than most, less obsessive, more devoted than some and very obedient. And so beautiful, as you see. We lost her in October 2012. She left big shoes to fill.

More rain! When will it end?
Somehow dogs don't seem to mind getting wet and then spreading their joy all over us. Joni always loves a beach especially if there's a ball involved. She would swim to the other side to get it, I'm sure. This was Kingsport beach in Nova Scotia a few years ago.

So now, (usually in the middle of the night, like last night) I stumble downstairs and put her coat on and that seems to calm her down. The cats laugh at her, but she doesn't care.
