I’d like to reintroduce myself and introduce my album “A Cufflink-Wearing Guy”.
I write songs and over the past 6 years roughly, I’ve collected 10 from about 100 to be recorded, mixed and mastered. As of today, those 10 songs are available to listen to at bandcamp as the album “A Cufflink-Wearing Guy” (https://alastairleonard.bandcamp.com/album/a-cufflink-wearing-guy)
There are songs about fleeting marketplace romances (Sunflowers), and going in search of your life’s purpose (Desert Rose). There are other songs about taking the easy road and waking up late (Mid-Morning Guy) and the housing crisis in Australia (Yoshino Removals). There are even more songs — about bad haircuts (West Coast Haircut) and the disappearance of the bees (Honey Bee). The title track follows a pair of cufflinks given to me as a young man and their trajectory through the following decades. All the lyrics are up there so you can read along while listening if that’s your preference.
The music is roughly what I’d call indie-pop including jangly guitars numbers and piano ballads but there are forays into country twang, latin percussion, and doof. Couldn’t resist. Found this #RSD release on ebay for what I would’ve paid in the store so I snatched it up. One of my favorite albums of all time (although I consider the 1989 Rhino CD release my definitive track listing). This sounds really good though. So fun.

Broke my rule about boots to get this rare bit of history...very early, very rough Wire doing a bunch of early tracks and covering...

Now that's something I'd never expect.
Supposedly a rehearsal tape recorded in August 1976 by Nick Garvey (or so says Read & Burn).

In Jonathan Richman’s “Monologue About Bermuda” he says the Modern Lovers’ trip to the island signaled the end of the band because he was getting more excited by what the local guys like these guys were doing. Features “Bang Bang Lulu.”

#ThePastels were/are a quietly revolutionary band from Glasgow. The were DIY in many respects and paved the way for #BelleAndSebastian, #Mogwai and #FranzFerdinand. I loved the "anorak" scene, which was basically dressing down in the 80s when everyone else was dressing up. Their songwriting was a bit #JonathanRichman, a bit deliberately fragile but they still knew how to rock. The opening track on their debut LP "Ride" is massive and still sounds great.

Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, Modern Lovers ’88, 1987 on Rounder
Although the Modern Lovers formed in Natick MA, this incarnation formed in California and recorded this album in Grass Valley CA. This became the final album for Richman with the Modern Lovers, as a trio, with Brennan Totten and Johnny Avila.
My copy—via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN—is the Craft Recordings’ 2022 Record Store Day 35th Anniversary Edition on blue vinyl. This reissue itself charted (a first for a Modern Lovers release) at 77 on the US album charts.

The Modern Lovers, The Modern Lovers, 1976 on Beserkley
Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers are part of the indie rock canon, especially here in greater Boston. They formed in Natick MA in 1970, and were active from 1970 to 1974, but most of their records came out later – this one in 1976.
Jerry Harrison (of Talking Heads) gets credit for piano, organ, and backing vocals, with Ernie Brooks playing bass, and David Robinson drums. John Cale produced six of the songs. That’s a gig poster for Gloucester High School auditorium on the rear cover.
Some legendary songs here – “Roadrunner” (which you may know via the Sex Pistol’s cover and after which a local venue is now named) and “Pablo Picasso” which has been covered by many people including David Bowie and Jack White.
My copy—via A1 records in NYC—is a later reissue (2009) by 4 Men With Beards on 180g vinyl.

Been listening to the ”Original Modern Lovers” (Bomp) collection of summer 72 Dinky Dawson demos and October 73 Kim Fowler sessions, plus a boot of unreleased studio demos and I sure wish these would all get a proper mix, mastering, and official release.
That band didn’t record that much stuff. It should *all* be available in the quality it deserves.
