    Socialism Or Barbarism - #TheReds
    youtu.be/xz8oTfNFq1I?si=6z37P8

    Lyrics:

The cities burn, the rivers dry,
They sell us hope, we buy the lie.
A world in chains, a rising flood,
The gears grind on, soaked in blood.
And from the ashes of the old,
A voice of fire, brave and bold.
It's socialism or barbarism, nothing in between,
A future built on justice, or a nightmare machine.
We rise or we perish, there’s no other way —
Choose love or the sword, we decide today.
The workers march, the bosses scheme,
They steal our labor, kill the dream.
But from the fields to factory floor,
    We won’t be slaves forevermore.
Hear Rosa whisper through the storm:
"The world can break, or be reborn."
It's socialism or barbarism, nothing in between,
A future built on justice, or a nightmare machine.
We rise or we perish, there’s no other way
Choose love or the sword, we decide today.
    History bends, but it remembers
The blood spilled in the cold Decembers.
If we don’t fight, if we don’t shout
They’ll burn the whole damn planet out.
    Breakdown
No more war for oil and gold.
No more lies that we are sold.
We take the world back in our hands
No gods, no masters, just demands.
It's socialism or barbarism, the line is drawn in flame,
We march for liberation, not fortune or fame.
We rise, we resist, we fight, we stay
For the red dawn that breaks a brighter day.
    Choose now…
    Choose clear…
    Socialism…
    Or disappear!

  3. It’s Valentine’s Day, so let’s talk about something actually romantic—rebellion. Back in the early 2000s, I fell in love—not just with a person, but with an idea. Anarchy, DIY media, and the power of love as a radical force. It all started with Days of War, Nights of Love, a film I made, and a realization that I didn’t want a career—I wanted a revolution.

So, in honor of love and resistance, I wrote about that moment in my life—how I ditched the film industry for something wilder. Check it out here: amplifierfilms.ca/how-911-indy

  4. Just did the calculation: Trump’s last day in Office is January 20, 2029, 1,535 days from now.

We can do this-we WILL get through this-and we will regroup and do our part.

We’re not going to “Make America Great Again”, for America IS already great-but we can work to make America great for everybody who it isn’t great for. (That’s a long list)

Be kind-even to Trump lovers-they’ve lost their way-for now.

Don’t give up on our country-what it really stands for, and don’t give into fear, despair, and hate.

Be mad-be sad-cry-scream, whatever. But then like Kamala said-“Roll up your sleeves-and get back to work. ”

This Republic needs YOU-it needs all of US.

We started out fighting tyranny-we fought a Civil War so people with darker skin could be treated with dignity, we marched on foreign soil to stop dictators-and so that IS who we are-a people who stand up to bullies-and do what is RIGHT-together.

  5. More radical climate action can help the movement in several ways:

    1) More attention for the issue
Even quite disruptive protests no longer get headlines. Research suggests that even when people disapprove of the specific tactics, they're more likely to support the cause if they hear about it more often.

    2) Increased support for moderate groups
When the public is exposed to a group that seems particularly extreme, more moderate groups seem reasonable by comparison.

    3) Greater willingness to take action
When people see radical actions, they become more willing to engage in moderate activism

In the flowchart below, the main choice we can control is whether moderate environmentalists choose to distance themselves from radicals, or condemn them. The choice between "obviously burning down this refinery was unacceptable - we propose to peacefully tax them out of existence instead" or "those aren't the tactics we've chosen, but we understand why some people feel they are necessary".

  6. @Sheril

Learn. Study the details of how historical campaigns for major change happened - not the simplified "everybody knows" versions, but in-depth stuff about the messy fighting.

The campaign to end slavery, women's suffrage, the right to unionise, Indian independence, the civil rights movement, South African apartheid: none of these happened in the way you were told.

All of those were arguably smaller changes to society than what is required now.

Once you start understanding how they were fought, you'll start to see what you need to do.

"No one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them. Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes, if they know that that knowledge will help set you free."

  7. @janrosenow

Wait, what? How is this reason for optimism??!?

If that was a straight-line reduction from 2023 to 2050 (it's not, it's actually worse than that, but just suppose), it would total to

    27 years * 40Gt CO2 / 2

which is 540 Gt CO2. That's how much they're planning to emit.

"The GCP’s estimates put the remaining carbon budget for 1.5C – specifically, the amount of CO2 that can still be emitted for a 50% chance of staying below 1.5C of warming – at 380bn tonnes of CO2 (GtCO2)."

"Combining the latest insights from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with the GCP’s data, we estimate that the remaining 1.5C carbon budget could be just 260GtCO2."

In other words, they're planning to DESTROY the carbon budget. Probably more than DOUBLE it!

    (Also CCUS is bullshit)

  8. @Brendanjones

For 1.5C, we'd basically have to shut down the global economy within ~3 years. That would probably kill billions of people.

We've delayed to the point where 1.5C is still *possible*, but no longer desirable.

There are no good futures any more. But we can still try for a less-catastrophic one.

Re: "I think there is a remoteness to targeting just Big Oil at source that won’t resonate or even register with the mainstream"

Most of these big struggles are only popular with "the mainstream" after they've happened. Then, everyone was always a supporter.

The point about targeting the infrastructure directly is that it stops what we need to stop.

(Albeit possibly indirectly, by raising their insurance costs until it's not worth them rebuilding.)

Going to watch "Chris Packham: Is It Time to Break the Law" tonight with my partner.

    (but available on All4)

I've been loathe to recommend this until now, but I've just come across this quote from it, and I'm now pretty sure it'll be worth watching!

"It's time for me to make up my own mind and decide if I should break the law. Me, myself - I'm not asking for anyone to break the law. So long as no one's hurt, I give my support to people who break the law for climate change. I have to raise my voice. I have reached the point where I now consider it, ethically, the reasonable thing to do."

The cost of reaching net zero: the ultra-rich lose some of their money and power; most people have a better life.

The cost of NOT reaching net zero: the end of civilisation.

They've made it very clear which one they'd prefer.

Re: ‘If your solution to some problem relies on “If everyone would just…” then you do not have a solution. Everyone is not going to just. At no time in the history of the universe has everyone just, and they’re not going to start now.’

We need to gather small groups of trusted people around us, and plan strategies that will effectively help, even when the vast majority or people are indifferent, brainwashed, or just too busy fighting for their own short-term survival.

Thus speaks someone who doesn't really see the violence in the current system.

    Re: uncivilised protest

But what would the three patron saints of nonviolence say about that?

"I was not like [Gandhi and King]. For them, nonviolence was a principle. For me, it was a tactic. And when the tactic wasn’t working, I reversed it and started over."
    - Nelson Mandela

"I am no doctrinaire pacifist. I have tried to embrace a realistic pacifism... violence exercised in self-defense, which all societies, from the most primitive to the most cultured and civilized, accept as moral and legal... the principle of self-defense, even involving weapons and bloodshed, has never been condemned, even by Gandhi, who sanctioned it for those unable to master pure nonviolence."
    - Dr. M.L. King Jr.

"I do believe that, where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence."
    - Mohandas Gandhi

Re: "RWE dismantling wind turbines to dig up 20m tonnes of lignite."

Lignite is ~30% carbon. Burning 1000 tonnes of carbon kills 1 person.

So this extra lignite will kill 6000 people.

That's a little over 2x the 9/11 World Trade Centre.
