  1. @ColinHaynes Well, I hope it's useful. The joinery is very different from western joinery; it's clear that the leg-to-top joints are really critical and resisting a lot of the wracking stresses, so if there's any slop in them the bench just won't work well.

  3. #TIL we could be making #satellites out of wood, using traditional #joinery without glue or screws. :moomin_hmm:

Idunno if I should tag this with #lowtech . It probably falls under the #solarpunk umbrella.
But the low/high tech split is silly anyway. :neofox_uwu:

  5. There's a ritual every carpenter or furniture maker knows. It's the walk into the workshop the next morning after a glue-up with your cup of coffee/tea in your hand (sometimes followed by a dog or cat).

    It's a good feeling.

(Unless you find a surprise error in your previous-day's thinking. No surprises here yet).

  7. "Squish-out" – something you love to see in cookies and woodworking/joinery, but not so much in subways and tailor shops.

Doing some glue-ups and it's gone pretty well today. A bit more cutting and assembly tomorrow and hopefully finishing this secondary workbench build.

  9. Aftermath of the glue-up of the shed door replacement. Just the panel, much to do still.

And I remembered to line my work surface with plastic so I didn't glue the door to the workbench.

Seems nicely flat. Nobody can say "you never caul." 🤣

  11. I've got wood! Er, boards acquired to make the aforementioned shed door, that is.

Going for a classic design. Tongue-and-groove pine with some 1x4" reinforcing framework.

  13. I've been experimenting with box joinery on my CNC recently and was curious about the differences in glue surface area and voids. Naturally, I modeled and simulated a bunch of them. Maybe this is helpful to somebody else as well 😅

  14. ...and now before I can cut another piece of wood I need to make a bunch of jigs. Mesmerising, surprisingly simple and possibly very useful set of jigs for different wood cuts.

  16. My first isukatsugi rabbeted joint to make a longer board from scrap

Learned that I need to account for the kerf and cut half a millimeter off the line, and always cut with both hands: the worst, wobbly cut was when I had one hand an the handle, another to stabilize the blade od my #dozuki. Not needed!

  18. Working on the cedar bench element of my raised-bed/pond combo this morning. Scrap paper planning here as I figure out the deets.

The persistence of imperial units in our construction supplies necessitates its continued use in our lives. I often employ metric where I can, but the imperial bits mean regular practice with fractions and related arithmetic. Sometimes decimal approaches are quick in there too though.

  20. It's wet outside, so am doing inside work today. Have been in need of a BBQ table, so finally gathering scrap wood to build it.

A postage-stamp-sized plan/sketch will ensure I get there without changing my mind too much along the way.

Let's see what I end up with.

  22. I can get small plywood sheets in a nearby DIY market to make sides for open shelves we have. I need to cut them into slices width-wise, ok; but I would also need to join them length-wise. The only way I know is with half-lap joints. But I'm talking about sheets, not boards, so only a couple of millimeters thick (maybe 5mm).

Can't use dowels at that side, either.

What to do, what do do.

  25. Always admired this kitchen table. Very well built. The tusk tenons are holding like on their first day, no movement of any sort.

It's designed so the cross-bar doesn't interfere with the human legs and the X interferes less than a regular square leg on a table corner.

Pretty sure the customer wants to stain that.
