That presentation of Jabula is clearly linked in my memory to the ? 1976 version (Edit: Remembering 1968 Jabulani) only by the rhythm and sequence of the central chord progression.
Everything else, the centrality of the percussion, the expanse of "white space", the frugality of trumpet, and piano only sprinkled late is new. And demands I go listen to that recording from half a century ago.#AbdullahIbrahim #DollarBrand #JohnTchicai #Jabula #Jabulani

A year or so prior to his death, I spent a wonderful afternoon with John Tchicai, who stayed with a neighbour after a weird short gig (at a school nearby, with his longtime friend Giancarlo Nicolai). The neighbour couldn't pick him up and I was happy to oblige. We went for his luggage, got some pastries and then sat in my kitchen and he patiently answered all of the questions I could think up ... fondest memories indeed!
