Madame X: Amélie Gatreau und der Skandal um ihr Porträt
John Singer Sargents "Madame X", heute der Gipfel des eleganten Porträts, war damals ein Skandal. Warum? Das wird hier beleuchtet. -

"William Butler Yeats," John Singer Sargent, 1907.
Y'all know Sargent, the great society portraitist, by now.
In the early 1900s, Sargent was at the height of his fame, but also starting to slow down a bit. He'd gone hither and yon doing portraits of anybody who was anybody, and had weathered the "Madame X" scandal, and had continued to work at a prolific pace. But soon after this portrait (a commission, to be the frontispiece to a collection of Yeats' poetry), he officially closed his London studio and slowed down significantly....but still painted, almost up until his passing in 1925.
Yeats (1865-1913) was an Irish poet, playwright, and critic who was one of the great figures of 20th century literature. He co-founded Dublin's Abbey Theatre, was the driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, was an Irish Nationalist, and received the 1923 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Although he was in his 40s when this was drawn, he looks quite young. Yeats was known to be fussy about his appearance, and to cultivate a Boho image; perhaps Sargent was being flattering. But spare charcoal-on-paper style works wonderfully.

"Ramón Subercaseaux in a Gondola," John Singer Sargent, 1880.
Y'all know Sargent, the great society portraitist, by now.
This is from fairly early in his career, during one of his first visits to Italy, where he did a number of Venetian street scenes that were basically OK genre work. However, here he did something a bit different, possibly egged on by his subject.
Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña (1854-1937) was a Chilean diplomat and politician, and an artist himself who befriended Sargent and commissioned him to do a portrait of his wife. Sargent is having fun here; while this is a good example of American Impressionism, it's also nicely meta. He paints Subercaseaux bent over his sketchbook while riding in a gondola down one of Venice's canals. However, a closer look lets us see his eyes peering up at us, and not at the scenery. He's sketching the artist painting him, and by extension us, the audience. Here we have the observed also being an observer, an interesting twist.
Happy Portrait Monday!

"Madame X," John Singer Sargent, 1884.
Y'all know Sargent by now.
It's funny that this picture, now sometimes called "the American Mona Lisa," almost ended Sargent's career. He pursued Paris socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, wanting to paint her, and it took almost a year to complete. Originally it featured a shoulder strap sliding off her shoulder, which, when combined with the lack of jewelry and gloves, and the gown's plunging neckline, was seen as too sexual and salacious; some thought it hinted at an affair between artist and subject. Not likely, Sargent was a very active gay man.
The New Orleans-born Gautreau was one of the great beauties of Parisian society, and was pursued by several portraitists. Although it's often said her reputation was ruined by this painting; it really wasn't as most of the backlash was directed at Sargent. She did become more choosy about which functions she would attend, and she had several more portraits done, one almost identical to this but was greeted only with praise.
Now it's regarded as one of the great classic works of American art!
Happy Portrait Monday!

🎨 John Singer Sargent był amerykańskim mistrzem portretu, znanym ze swojej wirtuozerii technicznej i zdolności do uchwycenia esencji swoich modeli. Jego dzieła, pełne elegancji i subtelnych emocji, uczyniły go jednym z najważniejszych artystów swojego czasu. Fascynujące jest, w jak niewielu pociągnięciach pędzla potrafił oddać głębię osobowości portretowanych osób! #Sztuka #Portret #JohnSingerSargent #HistoriaSztuki

"Capri Girl on a Rooftop," John Singer Sargent, 1878.
Early in his career, Sargent was focused on landscapes; this scene is from when he was making the transition from landscape to portrait. This is also about the time he was starting to achieve some notice and fame.
The girl of the title is Rosina Ferrara, a local woman who became a muse to several artists. Considered quite an exotic beauty, she became the subject of a dozen paintings by Sargent in one year. Charles Sprague Pearce, Frank Hyde, and George Randolph Barse also painted her. She married Barse and came to the US, where they had a long life.
Sargent was also a musician, and reportedly almost as good a musician as he was a painter. Some of his paintings involved music and dance, like his famous "Jaleo" of a Spanish dancer. He was a champion of contemporary composers like Gabriel Fauré, and he was known to play for friends at parties.
Just the thing for s summer evening, eh?

"An Out-of-Doors Study," John Singer Sargent, 1889.
I've talked about Sargent before, so I won't go into detail except to reiterate that he was THE great society painter of the Edwardian era whose portraits were in demand.
Here we have a double portrait of his friend, painter Paul Helleu, and his wife Alice. Sargent was experimenting with this canvas, trying a different arrangement than his usual, and I think it's a lovely, intimate scene. Paul is busily at work on a new painting; Alice, though, looks disengaged and bored. I was inclined to draw conclusions about their marriage but some research indicates they had a strong and happy marriage, and she was quite a business partner for him.
Wouldn't it be nice to sit by a river and paint?

"Lady Agnew of Lochnaw," John Singer Sargent, 1892.
Sargent (1856-1925) was THE great society portraitist of the Edwardian era, painting many of the rich and famous...or at least the rich.
Here we have a portrait of Gertrude Vernon, aka Lady Agnew of Lochnaw. Her husband, Sir Andrew Agnew, the 9th Baronet of Lochnaw, married her in 1889, and later joined the military, and then became a member of Parliament. Gertrude was the granddaughter of Robert Vernon, the 1st Lord Lyveden, a prominent Liberal politician in England.
This portrait was her greatest claim to fame; it was so good and so well-received that it made her quite the in-demand personality of the day. However, reportedly the family fell on hard times and was forced to sell the painting to the Scottish National Gallery in 1925, which currently has it out on loan to an American gallery.
Random trivia: The current Lord Lyveden, Colin Vernon, resides in New Zealand.
