I couldn't sleep last night so ended up reading John Muir's A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf, which describes his trip on foot from Ohio through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia when he was 29 years old. This was before he made his way to California.
Apart from the nature and impressive trail skills, I was fascinated that Muir made this trip in Sept-Oct of 1867—just a year and a half after the end of the Civil War! People in Appalachia at that time were very suspicious and many of them had little to spare to help a wandering botanist. There were roving bands of Confederates-turned-robbers. I was so nervous for him!

“Grasslands, Winter Morning” — A foggy winter morning in a region of grasslands and vernal pools in California’s Central Valley.
One of my favorite John Muir stories concerns how he first traveled to the Sierra. He Walked! From the Bay Area! From what I recall he went via Pacheco Pass (today’s state route 152) before entering the Great Central Valley. I often take this route when heading east, so I’m frequently reminded of his journey. @intrepidhero love those maps! watched hikers on #JohnMuir Trail this month trying to navigate with tiny screen and tripping on rocks while reading phone. Silly. Plus they missed the magic! Trial mileage to Cathedral Lakes has actually changed a bit with a new route to protect meadows.
