  1. "When did you last hear, from any party, a senior politician make a lengthy detailed speech on what we needed to do to protect our place in the world - and our values and our wealth - 25 years from now" - John Major

    @rhys

    To be fair, most of them were pretty barking already....

    Clearly Tim Stanley has forgotten that #JohnMajor was the Chancellor a while back.... I reckon he was closer to a Dalek than #RachelReeves - by the way, I just love the way she just cannot stop smiling .....

    The joy in #Labour circles is lovely - almost as heart-warming as the increasingly deranged anger expressed by the apoplectic Right - very, very funny!!!

  3. The Good Friday Agreement #GFA, signed in 1998, ended most of the violence of #TheTroubles.
    It called for a commission to review policing in #NorthernIreland. As a consequence, in 2001, the Royal Ulster Constabulary #RUC was reformed and renamed to #PSNI.
    Jon Boutcher, the Chief Constable of the PSNI, leads Operation #Kenova, which has spent the last seven years, and £40m, investigating 101 murders and abductions linked to the #British military double-agent known by the code #Stakeknife.

    One of the report’s most serious conclusions is that the impunity was discussed at Cabinet level during the conflict and continued until six years after the #IRA ceasefire of 1994 and two years after the Good Friday Agreement.
    (Prime Ministers: Margaret #Thatcher, #JohnMajor, Tony #Blair.)

  4. The #Tories infamous Rail Privatisation, the gift which keeps on giving, mainly from the British Taxpayer to foreign railways!! NB: Those Commies in the Tory Party have Nationalised four railways in five years!

  5. @jaycee

    There used to be some decent ones - wrong-headed, sure but #johnMajor #roryStewart #theresaMay and others were at least honest

    Even on the #right they were not #corrupt like their modern equivalents - I can't see #enochPowell being sacked for #corruption (moral corruption, sure - but not putting his hand in the till.....)

  6. Mission 2024: Rishi Sunak’s ‘laborious’ challenge to repeat 1992

The situations in 2024 and 1992 are almost identical. A struggling economy, over a decade of Conservative rule and a widespread prediction of a Labour victory in the 2024 election.

In 1992, Major played the captain of the ship and steered the Tories through a less than stellar campaign, which had Labour ahead in the polls throughout. It was only in the last moments Major upped the ante and warned a recession-hit society of the further gloom they might face under a Labour government. These attacks landed well, and Labour lost so badly they might well have sunk into a political Mariana trench.
