The John Birch Society is an #extremist, isolationist, anti-atheist right-wing organization founded by candy manufacturer Robert W. Welch, Jr. in 1958 as a last line of defense against the massively ongoing, clandestine Communist takeover of the United States in his view, but in reality it is a wingnut #red-baiting #propaganda machine. Starting in 1954, when Dwight Eisenhower was President, Welch circulated various drafts of a "letter" calling Eisenhower (among others) a "conscious, dedicated agent of the Communist Conspiracy". Welch eventually self-published it in a 1964 in a book titled The Politician. The publication was an early example of how ridiculously batshit the JBS is. Welch and the early Birchers knew how far from the mainstream they were and so they were largely successful in hiding their activities and motivations in their early years.

The author had access to the archives of the John Birch Society, making this a definitive work on the society. Parts of the book are overly detailed for my taste. It remains an informative work for today despite the #JBS as an organization being in decline, the book shows how the JBS's tactics and targets have fused with the modern #GOP
