When I bother to counter such nonsense I tell them "Republic is the structure of the relationship of the states to the federal government; democracy is how we decide policy direction. What you just said is as ridiculous as saying 'We don't have a steering wheel, we have a car.' "
Usually of course I don't bother and just block and move on.
