Rob Reiner – „Stand By Me“ (1986)Wenn man(n) die Lebensmitte schon eine Weile hinter sich hat, dann bekommen nicht nur Erinnerungen an Filme, sondern auch an die eigene Kindheit und Jugend jedes Jahr einen neuen Stellenwert. Nach dem plötzlichen Tod von Rob Reiner und seiner Frau – und der dahinter stehenden Familientragödie vor nur ein paar Tagen -, fällt es mir allerdings tatsächlich schwer, diesen Film nicht auch als ein frühes Vermächtnis seines Regisseurs zu sehen. Auch, weil ich damals, als ich ihn zuerst sehen durfte, das meiste meines eigenen Lebens noch vor mir hatte. (ZDFneo, Wh.)

The delightful history behind serendipity suggests it’s not mere luck

In the new year, we can all use some serendipity, right?
Since the word was coined in the 18th century, “serendipity” has been used to describe all kinds of scientific and technological breakthroughs, including penicillin, the microwave oven and Velcro. (More on these below.)
The whimsical term has also been the title of countless poems, songs and books about remarkable coincidences or eureka moments. And let’s not forget that it was the name of the charming 2001 romantic comedy about two strangers — played by John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale — meeting and reuniting during chance encounters.
“Serendipity” — as the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it — is “the ability to find valuable or agreeable things not sought for” or “luck that takes the form of such finding.”
While the word has often been associated with good fortune or happy accidents, its origin suggests that serendipity goes beyond just happenstance. Some researchers argue that serendipity can be acquired through skill and that opportunities for serendipitous moments occur more frequently than we realize.
In this week’s installment of NPR’s Word of the Week, we dive into the roots of serendipity, its impact throughout history and tips on how we can cultivate it ourselves.
Serendipity’s wayward journey
While serendipity is all about the unexpected, its origins are less mysterious.

George also had a long history w/ #RogerCorman making sexploitation & blaxploitation films in the 70s. & TIL he passed away in Feb 2025.

Der Tod riecht hier nach feuchtem Holz. Genauer: Nach dem Holz eines Sarges in frischer Erde. Hier verschluckt der Boden jede Hoffnung. Kein großes Westernkino, kein Mythos von Eroberung – nur Matsch, Regen und die Leere einer Welt, die nur von Gewalt zusammengehalten wird. Selten habe ich einen Western gesehen, der so sehr nach einem alten Friedhof aussieht. Vielleicht, weil hier ein Ire auf die Gründungsfantasie Amerikas blickt und ihr alle Illusionen nimmt. #JohnCusack posted a meme that many on #bluesky are calling antisemitic. It's gone now and I assume he deleted it.
but my question is re moderation. bluesky should be able to take down such a post on their servers, but if the ATmosphere was decentralized, they wouldn't be able to stop him from posting it on another server and most users on the network from seeing it.
and shouldn't bluesky stop their users from harassing him no matter what? but when does criticism become abuse?
