Thick, slate-gray clouds press low over Hampstead’s undulating hills, their edges catching flecks of silver light. Constable’s brushwork sharpens the contrast between laboring figures and the vast, shifting sky—does the weight of the clouds mirror the burden of the land?

Saw that "Constable and Turner" (title?) was showing at the movies yesterday.
And set up to see it today.
But yesterday turns out to have been the last day."There is no God!"

Something a little different from the aurora shots recently. I popped in to London's National Gallery last week with my Leica M240 in hand, mounted with the Voigtlander 28mm f/1.5 II lens.
Having been using auto focus for a while, I've missed that hands on full manual focus way of shooting with a rangefinder.
This shot turned out okay (even if I do say so myself LOL).

Who Was Richard Wilson?
Richard Wilson (1714–1782) was a prominent Welsh landscape painter, often considered one of the leading figures in British art during the 18th century. He was known for his ability to convey the beauty of natural scenery and the interplay of light and shadow. Wilson’s works typically reflect the influence of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the landscapes of painters like Claude Lorrain and the rich color palettes found in works by the Old Masters.

"Cloud Study, Hampstead, Tree at Right," John Constable, 1821.
Constable (1776-1837) was THE great British landscape artist, although he had little recognition in his own country during his lifetime. A combination of bad luck and poor business sense kept him financially struggling most of his life. It wasn't until after his death that his work began to be prized by the British, and the phrase "Constable country" entered the lingo as a descriptor for lovely countryside.
Here we have an unusual painting for him, a study of clouds. It's a simple subject but took a lot of work to get down as he observed them...after all, clouds are ever-changing and ever-moving.
Although technically of the Romantic school, some feel this was an early precursor to Impressionism, which was waiting in the wings...
And now in modern times we have cloudspotting guides and clubs, to remind us to slow down and watch nature...

Came across this painting of Hampstead Heath by John Constable in the National Gallery in London. Standing in front of it I felt like I could feel the sunshine & smell the breeze, step into the frame & go & pat the donkey & then wander off into the distance. This photo doesn’t capture a fraction of the life & vitality in this painting. Imagine creating a work of art so full of life and beauty that it can speak to someone across nearly two hundred years. #Painting #JohnConstable #HampsteadHeath
