Watched The Furious in the cinema.
The plot is fairly simple. Sadly it's yet another HK movie that reinforces the image of Thailand as a wretched hive of scum and villainy, the English parts of the dialogue read as written by a highschooler, and are dubbed in the worst way that sounds like someone in a hurry to go to lunch is just reading the lines.
It is not the 1980s anymore. Why do you even dub? It really drags down the immersion. I don't get it.
But this is a martial arts movie, and wow, the martial arts.
Not only is the choreography varied, interesting and creative, where different people have distinct personalities and unique styles, and the fighting is creative, making great use of environment and props, but the fighting is really part of the story arc, tells the story, develops the relationships between the parties fighting.
It is also, and you may count this as a positive or a negative – as for me I'm neutral in terms of enjoyment but fascinated at the decision – the absolute bloodiest and goriest I have seen in a high-quality martial arts movie.
Fun to see Joe Taslim, whom I previously saw in the Chinatown Wild West TV series Warrior, where he was triad right-hand man Li Yong. Highly recommended show, btw, sadly canceled too early.
The movie has several ideas I really appreciate, which get overshadowed by the lack of effort in dialogue and writing. It's cool that people speak Mandarin, Thai, Filipino, Indonesian and English. It's even more interesting that the main character speaks sign language. Even more could have been done with this, where he and his daughter could have used this skill, caused by a disability, to their advantage. There are also conflicts and moral ambiguities that are interesting, but get resolved too quickly or are underused.

“The Furious”: Won’t Somebody From “The Raid” Please Think About the Children
Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: Once every decade some indie studio will scrounge up enough money to afford a brief wide release for a brutal foreign-language martial-arts flick to remind Americans the John Wick series isn't the be-all-end-all of the genre. The last one I saw on the big screen was 2014's The Raid 2, so I'm pretending to be an authority here. Such works rarely hit the big screen near us, or if they do, nobody tells me. Not that I watch a lot of them anyway, but at last, another one has broken through that isn't a Raid sequel! Judging by US box office tallies, nobody noticed last weekend's premiere of The Furious, the third work from Kenji Tanigaki as a primary director. He's a longtime stunt coordinator with a hand in numerous Western movies from Blade II to Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins, who also collaborated with four writers on the six or seven minutes' worth of scenes that are not fights. For anyone who hoped Mortal Kombat II's tournament would be more a visceral thrill-ride but found its sci-fi artificiality a cartoonish letdown, The Furious is here for you. The Gist: THEY FIGHT! AND FIGHT! AND FIGHT AND FIGHT AND FIGHT! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT! ... […] -
