  2. If Melonville had a film festival, these are the movies it would show. This is a comprehensive #Letterboxd list I made of every movie #SCTV has parodied. It's possible that I missed some. #JohnCandy #EugeneLevy #AndreaMartin #CatherineO'Hara #JoeFlaherty #MartinShort #RickMoranis #RobinDuke

  3. Some reflecting with the recent passing of #JoeFlaherty , who was probably my favourite comedian on #SCTV .
His Guy Caballero & Count Floyd characters motivated me to be them for two Halloweens -- this several years into reruns of the show.
Here's Joe on a full episode of the Canadian game show #Definition in 1982 as he "dances" in his chair to "Soul Bossa Nova", with a nautically musical opening pun:

  4. Joe Flaherty passed away. I grew up watching him on Second City (then later SCTV). Great stuff. Later I discovered him in Freaks & Geeks, which is a show I highly recommend watching if you get a chance.

  6. #JoeFlaherty rest in peace.

I remember he dressed up as a Montréal #Canadiens player with John Candy (I didn’t know who they were until later). There were times #Canadian TV programs would filter through on #NYC channels. #SCTV

Aw yeah I found it on #YouTube 🏒

  7. If you know comedy, then you know the name Joe Flaherty. A comedians comedian, Joe Flaherty passed away on April 1st at 82, and that's no joke. He was a pillar of the underrated Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV, which featured numerous luminaries like Martin Short and John Candy, but they all said he was the funniest guy in the room. With a sharp, quick wit he was a master improvisational comic. He will be missed. #sctv #canada #joeflaherty #comedy #freaksandgeeks rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-

  8. "I'd say the SCTV people bring to Hollywood a certain — I would say it's an ability to get the most out of a script ... as well or better than anybody else in the biz." Flaherty told CBC News in 1986.

"It's simply a matter of knowing how... your part fits in with the rest of the characters, and then how to get the most out of it. That's the bottom line, is to just milk it for everything it's worth."

  11. " #MartinShort : I waited so long to audition because I was afraid. The idea of improvising comedy was daunting to me. I liked doing musicals and plays. I always saw myself more as an actor than as someone in comedy. I joined in 1977, when I replaced #JohnCandy in a show. Instead of playing a scene like John played it, it was like, “Why don’t I just do it as, oh…Columbo?” They wanted you to play to your strengths.

#CatherineOHara : It was my university of comedy: writing, character development, thinking on your feet and learning about scene structure. All of the lessons I learned there, I’m still working on every day. They threw out a lot of references in Chicago. They loved to drop philosophers’ names. Or authors’. In Toronto, we were just trying to crack people up. For us, it was about characters: people we met on the subway, our family members. Our scenes were more about the dynamics between human beings. It was more emotional. We weren’t as well read.

#JoeFlaherty : We were just trying to be funny! Get laughs! In order for the audience to accept us, I wanted them to leave the theatre having laughed a lot."
