This evening's viewing: classic 80s horror, Joe Dante's The Howling (complete with a very young, pre-Trek Robert Picardo!).
For my money, along with American Werewolf in London (from the same era), still one of the best lycanthrope movies of all time, with incredible transformation effects, all achieved with practical, on-set effects.

I just watched an episode of Masters of Horror called Homecoming directed by Joe Dante.
Almost all of Dante's movies are political but you often need to interpret. In 2005 he had something to say about the Iraq War and George W. Bush. This time there was no subtlety involved.
Homecoming is not great. If it had been purely black humor it might have worked better but it also tries to be sentimental which falls flat. As a political statement I love it.

I just watched The 4:30 Movie. A semi-autographical film by Kevin Smith about high-schoolers in 1986 who go to the cinema.
I really enjoyed it though I wouldn't put it up with Cinema Paradiso or Matinee, the best in the movies-about-movies genre. Really funny at times and great 80s bad movie pastiches.
Kevin Smith was a guest on The Movies That Made Me podcast last week and was extremely happy to hear that Joe Dante had been up for directing Batman (before Tim Burton got the job).

The Movies That Made Me podcast is my favourite podcast about film. Instead of talking to filmmakers about their movies they discuss the, you know, "movies that made them".
Kevin Smith doesn't stick to the rules in his appearance, he even talks about his own mental health. He also made me interested to see his latest film *The 4:30 Movie* (not 420). Movies about movies is one of my favourite genres.
One of the movies Kevin mentions as having made him is *The World According To Garp" which he saw in a theater at an "inappropriate" age. I only saw it on TV but I was also quite young, about ten I think. It has stuck with me. I even read the book about a quarter century later.
I wasn't the only one in my school to see Garp. I remember talking about that one scene, you know.
I did wonder where the name Garp came from because it is quite similar to the Icelandic/Norse word "garpur" (which means something like hero/champion). The word was used as the Icelandic name of He-Man (Garpur og hetjur himingeimsins).
I sometimes wonder about "inappropriate" films and now I think about which movies my sons will talk about having watched with me at an inappropriate age.

I remember when I first heard about the proposed film "Jaws 3 - People 0" I thought it was a funny joke someone made, a "haha, wouldn't it be funny if ..."
Actually it was almost made. Not a "Scary Movie" type of thing but the actual third movie of the #Jaws franchise.
When I say almost I mean that the script was written by some #JohnHughes while #JoeDante had been hired as the director. They had even made storyboards (without consulting the director).
When #JoeDante heard that #TheHowling needed a director while there were obviously some problem with the production he decided to give up what would have been his first studio picture.
