For my money, along with American Werewolf in London (from the same era), still one of the best lycanthrope movies of all time, with incredible transformation effects, all achieved with practical, on-set effects.

Gremlins, Joe Dante, 1984
Un joven recibe como regalo de Navidad una extraña y pequeña criatura llamada mogwai, la cual requiere tres cuidados estrictos para evitar consecuencias desastrosas. El dueño del animal no debe exponerlo a la luz del sol, no debe mojarlo bajo ninguna circunstancia y jamás debe alimentarlo después de la medianoche. El incumplimiento accidental de estas tres indicaciones básicas desencadena la multiplicación de la criatura y su posterior mutación en una serie de monstruos destructivos que siembran el caos absoluto en un pequeño pueblo estadounidense durante las fiestas decembrinas.
La película destaca por combinar elementos de comedia negra y terror mediante el uso de efectos especiales mecánicos y marionetas detalladas, logrando dar una personalidad única a cada uno de los seres que destruyen el entorno urbano. El guion expone una sátira directa hacia el consumismo de la época, las tradiciones navideñas comerciales y las películas familiares optimistas de los años 80, ofreciendo un ritmo ágil que mantiene la atención del espectador en todo momento. Esta producción se convirtió en un referente de la cultura popular cinematográfica del siglo XX debido a su capacidad para generar tensión y diversión sin depender de la tecnología digital actual.

I just watched an episode of Masters of Horror called Homecoming directed by Joe Dante.
Almost all of Dante's movies are political but you often need to interpret. In 2005 he had something to say about the Iraq War and George W. Bush. This time there was no subtlety involved.
Homecoming is not great. If it had been purely black humor it might have worked better but it also tries to be sentimental which falls flat. As a political statement I love it.

Tom Hanks’ name may be above the title, but Joe Dante was the real draw. Like Sam Raimi, he was one of those directors that my film-loving friends and I gravitated towards. Apparently this originally had a much darker ending until Hanks was cast — would have loved to have seen that version too.
