  1. Benny Carter Meets Oscar Peterson

A swinging session with two greats, joined by Joe Pass (guitar), Dave Young (bass), and Martin Drew (drums).

Lots of standards, ending with a co-written original (Some Kind of Blues).

  2. "You can't think and play. If you think about what you're playing, the playing does become stilted. You have to just focus on the music, I feel. Concentrate on the music, focus on what you're playing and just let the playing come out. Once you start thinking about doing this or playing that, it's not good."

  3. Joe Pass - Portraits of Duke Ellington

Discusssed by Ken in the referenced video, Joe’s joined by Bobby Durham (drums), and Ray Brown (bass).

    As Ken says—great.

  4. Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass - Take Love Easy

Late-period (although she was only 56), 1974 Ella Fitzgerald album on Pablo, focusing on ballads with the expected tasteful accompaniment by Joe Pass.

    A mellow affair, nicely recorded.

  6. Dizzy Gillespie’s Big 4

Here’s a gem from the Acoustic Sound Pablo series - a late-period (1973) LP from Dizzy that’s beautifully played by everyone, and sounds great to boot.

Some serious, fast work from Gillespie and Pass on Be Bop (Dizzy’s Fingers), too. I’d say more “Dizzy & Joe’s Fingers”.

  7. Duke Ellington - Duke’s Big 4

This 1973 session with Ellington (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Ray Brown (bass) and Louis Bellson (drums) is great. Just a terrific set of great blues and swing, played exuberantly by Duke and his sidemen.

This is part of the Acoustic Sounds Pablo reissue series and sounds really good. A bit too much for the B&O, which got a little flabby with the drum solo bass hits, but the Rega did great.

  9. The Alternate Blues - Terry / Hubbard / Gillespie + Peterson

This is the first of Acoustic Sounds Pablo reissue series, featuring three great horn players - Dizzy, Freddie and Clark Terry. With them, Oscar Peterson (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Ray Brown (bass) and Bobby Durham (drums).

A good time was had by all. Pretty great.

(I hope the money Pablo saved on this cover art was given to the artists…)
