I was asked my the Communications team at work to participate in African World Heritage Day on Tuesday. I'll share my post here on the day but thought some of the photos I sent were actually quite lovely.
This one is of Johannesburg in spring when the jacaranda is blooming. If I recall correctly, I took it through my rose-tinted sunglasses.
Any Jo'burg photographers on here? I'd love to connect. I've been back in UK for almost 20 years but I spent 25 years in Jo'burg

Johannesburg, South Africa Summer thunder! ⛈️ High of 27°C. Watch for those spectacular afternoon high-veld thunderstorms. They come in fast and loud, then leave the air smelling incredibly fresh.

Johannesburg's inner city is a beautiful place, it has long been neglected and left to criminals and gangs. Hope this current partnership comes to something.

Johannesburg, South Africa
A classic Highveld summer day. High of 26°C. Expect clear skies this morning followed by the buildup of impressive afternoon cumulonimbus clouds. A late-day thundershower is likely to provide a refreshing evening. 🇿🇦⛈️ #Joburg #SouthAfrica #SummerRain https://youtu.be/yA4NyWICpBY -
Johannesburg, South Africa ⛈️ Afternoon thundershowers for #Joburg! We’ll start with a hot morning reaching 27°C (81°F), but keep an eye on those building clouds. The classic Highveld storm is expected around 4 PM. It’ll clear up nicely for a mild evening low of 15°C (59°F). Stay safe during the lightning! #Johannesburg #SAWeather #SummerStorms https://youtu.be/07kcJQmHdBM

Johannesburg, South Africa Summer afternoon storms! ⛈️ 26°C with big clouds building up for a late-day thunder-show. It’s the classic Joburg rhythm. Enjoy the lightning show tonight! #Joburg #SouthAfrica #SummerRain https://youtu.be/FzMhxdE35e0

Johannesburg, South Africa
⛈️ Afternoon thundershowers are likely today. We’re hitting a high of $24^\circ\text{C}$ before the clouds build up. These Highveld storms move in fast and pack a punch with heavy rain and occasional hail, so keep an eye on the sky after 2 PM. It’ll clear up nicely for a fresh evening. 🇿🇦

Has anyone visited Pretoria Zoo recently? Is it worth it for the Kids or is Jo'burg Zoo a better experience?

#Joburg has a lot in store for #aviation buffs, e.g. the #SAAMuseum.

I know I am saying that not for the first time, but: Don’t be afraid of the #Johannesburg inner city areas like #Marshalltown.
And if you are there, go for lunch e.g. at Sadie‘s. Friendly people, solid food, good #RedCapuccino.
-
#Klipriviersberg is a very nice #NatureReserve in #Johannesburg.
You can even spot #wildlife like the #Wildebeest there if you are lucky.
-
I know I have already said that frequently, but #Johannesburg has so many impressive #museum|s.
If you are into #cars, #HorseCarriage|s, #Tram|s, the first #SouthAfrica|n #ElectricCar (prototypes of the #Joule already existed when #Tesla wasn’t a thing yet) or other modes of #transport, the #JamesHallMuseumOfTransport is a must see.
Many of the exhibits are in an excellent condition, too.

Thanks to @roblaing's post I came across the awesome and (for me at least) new #SouthAfrica|n #newsmedia site #CurrencyNews (which unlike the name suggests is no exchange rate website...)
The reporting about the #JohannesburgArtGallery alone are worth a subscription in my opinion (EDIT: Even though all articles I have seen so far are not behind a paywall and I hope it stays that way, like on #DailyMaverick):

I have no doubt our former #Johannesburg mayor will have a stellar career as a comedian:
「#KabeloGwamanda resigns as Johannesburg mayor
[...]
“As the youngest Mayor of Johannesburg I am humbled by the opportunity to have led this City and to have stabilised it financially and administratively following the collapse of the Multi-party coalition government,” #Gwamanda said.
He added he was pleased that he managed to “place good governance on course” and stated that the City achieved the best audit outcomes in years, under his leadership.
“I shall continue to serve the people of Johannesburg as a Councillor and will forever cherish the experience afforded to me in my tenure as the Executive Mayor,” he said.
He hopes his story inspires African children in Johannesburg that “against deprivation, isolation, social and political exclusion and with the absence of friends and peers in the corporate and media hierarchy, one can live and rise on the noble cause of changing the conditions of the poor”.」

「But now #Johannesburg is on the cusp of firing hapless #KabeloGwamanda as mayor as the #ANC at national level clicks how it lost the election primarily in the cities. #Gwamanda is like a character from Can Themba’s story The Suit – an empty caricature of a mayor. He is the fifth mayor since the election in 2021, when no single party won.
Elected as part of a tortured compromise to create a coalition between the ANC and the #EFF, Gwamanda is from #AlJamaAh, which has only three seats in the council.
He owes loyalty and fealty to his political bosses, but he needs to show no accountability to the people because they did not appoint him. In a callous display of this, he called citizens “stooges” in July when protests grew against the impact of sky-high electricity tariffs and charges.
According to my source, he will be out in a week, and the city will have its sixth mayor since the local government election in 2021.
As the place where gold was discovered and a metropolis shot up without a supporting river or body of water, Johannesburg is an exciting and storied city.
Rebuilding #JoburgThe mayoral musical chairs is a political joke, but it’s not funny. Johannesburg is systemic for South Africa; it’s too big to fail. Too many people live here. Too much of the economy is concentrated here. Too much of our history is contained here.
It is going to take much more than a change of mayor to fix it. What does that fix look like? Fortunately, we know about it because of the work of #Jozi My Jozi, the civil society and corporate programme to bring it back from the brink, and the #JohannesburgCrisisAlliance.
Jozi My Jozi’s team has relit the Nelson Mandela Bridge and revamped the arterial on- and off-ramps into the city. In a major programme, its volunteers cleaned #Hillbrow on Mandela Day. Ahead of the All Blacks game at Ellis Park at the end of August, a plan is under way to revamp and uplift the eastern inner-city area from Ponte to Ellis Park and further down.
The Crisis Alliance has tabulated and project-managed exactly what a fix of Joburg will require and how it should happen. The city needs to be put under national administration, like Durban’s eThekwini council. It is the only way to bring back the two cities from the urbacide (killing of a city) visited upon them by local #StateCapture.
In Joburg, this will entail a legal shake-out of the administration and entities such as #CityPower, #JohannesburgWater, the #JohannesburgRoadsAgency and #Pikitup, through which the city is ostensibly managed. Each one of them is a basket case, rendered so by decades of cadre deployment and extractive politics.」

Up in #joburg at the moment and can't believe how out of date #Openstretmap is up here. Been adding tonnes of shops, restaurants, cafe, points of interest, even editing building, parking lots & tennis courts, etc. Hopefully get the suburb up to date before I leave.

@kaasbaas My parents are saying #joburg has been without #electricty all day?

「“Landed in #Joburg. The #Gautrain had just started. Jumped onto the Gautrain, whizzed through into #Sandton. World class. And then I walked across the road into the hotel and it was a Sunday afternoon and there was a pool party going on. Obviously no beaches, no mountains, no vineyards.
“There was a beautifully integrated crowd, not something we were always used to in the Cape. And I spent the afternoon talking to a young black architect by the name of Benedict, and it was just such a good energy. I didn’t even go for the interview, I just phoned the guy, Herman, and I said, ‘I’m in. I want to be in this city’.”Higgs found, in his instant new home, “a vibrant city, an integrated city. It was the energy of the city. Talking to someone later on, I said, ‘I love the energy of the city’ and they said, ‘You must understand that Joburg exists because of the Gold Rush, and hasn’t really changed; there’s massive opportunity here, everything moves at 100 km an hour, there’s no real off time, there’s no real off season.’
“It’s not like #CapeTown where it ebbs and flows and so forth. And I feel that. I love this city and have made it my home, more than Cape Town has ever been.”
The Joburg that Higgs fell in love with is a melting pot of #Africa.“How it relates to other cities, the Singapores, the Londons and the New Yorks, is that Joburg is a melting pot of African countries, west, east and southern Africa, and with that comes an incredible vibrancy: #art, #music, #food, #fashion.”」

#Sandton - In the early 1900s this was a rural landscape with horses and livestock roaming around, since then it has transformed into one of South Africa's economic powerhouses. Today, its towering skyscrapers, vibrant malls, and luxurious residential areas make it a symbol of progress and prosperity #Joburg 🧡 💙

Anyone here like trolley buses?
Johannesburg Sunbeam trolley bus of the 1960s, going from Mayfair to city past the trolley bus garage in Fordsburg.
