I keep jumping into conversations of other tech writers that are job hunting after my quick turn around a couple of months ago.

Folks are desperate for a secret way to crack this market. They are desperate for a way to blame themselves in order to find the thing they are doing wrong that's stopping them from getting interviews, much less offers.

I keep saying that it comes down to luck, but nobody likes that answer. They want something they can do, that's in their control.

I wish I could offer them something. It's just not the case.

This is sad to read, and I wonder if there is a vicious cycle going on?

Employers have too many applicants for each job for them to have the time to review them properly, so they use some BS AI that just rejects most of the candidates and doesn't even let them know they've been rejected.

So each applicant has to make up for it by applying for hundreds of jobs, making employers even more swamped.

To the extent that automated applicant filtering is happening, it's through the resumé, not the cover letter.
The purpose of a cover letter is to MAKE YOU STAND OUT. Submitting one you've generated by asking ChatGPT to regurgitate the job description in the form of a letter does the opposite of that.
Hiring managers can tell when you do it. So don't do it.

2025 was a super rough year. I kinda just dropped off into the void. Didn't really exist anywhere. Didn't do much in the way of the arts. 2026 isn't starting off great either. Started it looking for a job because I got laid off. I applied for all the state help this last week. Got my resume updated.

I'm gonna shoot my shot. Im looking to get into the nonprofit sector. I have 7 years of IT experience. 4 years being a #SystemsAdmin in hybrid environments. I'm most skilled in the windows ecosystem but I do have some Linux experience as well. I have my own home lab that I maintain using containers. Applications include Nextcloud, matrix, and linkstack.
