  3. "Markey combed through his application looking for a fatal flaw. He didn’t find anything he thought would prompt a residency program director to toss an otherwise competitive application, so his suspicion turned to another culprit. He’d heard rumblings that some hospitals were using a free AI screening tool to help process applications—and that it had been displaying incorrect grades for some students. He began to wonder whether AI was responsible for his lack of interview offers.

On the first page of his Medical Student Performance Evaluation, a comprehensive summary of his early career prepared by his school, Markey spotted language that he suspected might trigger an automated screening tool to downgrade his application. The MSPE stated that Markey had “voluntarily” taken three separate leaves of absence, totaling about 22 months, and had chosen to extend his third year of coursework over two years for “personal reasons.”

That wasn’t quite true. In 2021, Markey was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune disease that affects the spine and could flare up to the point where he couldn’t stand, much less do the intensive physical work expected of medical students during clinical rotations. He was on track to graduate from medical school in seven years, rather than the typical four, but his absences had been unavoidable and medically necessary. This was explained in a narrative paragraph on the first page.

Calling the absences “voluntary,” Markey felt, might be interpreted as evidence that he had succumbed to the pressure of medical school and not been able to keep up with his studies.
As the days went on, Markey said, he felt increasingly afraid that his years of training would end in failure.
    (...)
He was asking himself the same question that pops into the minds of millions of other job seekers every day: Did an AI trash my application?"

  4. "In experiments, when subjects learn that others will be excluded from purchasing an identical product, willingness to pay roughly doubles. Pure exclusivity premium. Anonymous, no status signaling possible. The premium is stronger for human-made goods. Human-created artwork gains 44% in value from exclusivity, versus 21% for AI-generated artwork. AI-made goods feel copyable. Human-made goods feel scarce even when they aren’t. People want what other people can’t have. That wanting doesn’t run out, and it sticks to things a person made.

Maybe the point is to wait long enough and AI variety erodes even that. Maybe. But the structural change evidence says income effects dominate price effects by three to one. When basic needs get cheaper, humans don’t say “good, I’m done wanting.” They invent new ways to compare themselves with neighbors. Whether the new wants land on human-made goods or AI-made goods is the open question, and the experimental evidence so far favors humans.

A falling labor share is not falling labor demand. There is a range where labor’s share of income is declining but total labor demand is still rising, because the pie is growing faster than labor’s slice is shrinking. That range may be where we are right now. It would look like “AI is taking over” in share terms while employment keeps growing. The popular argument runs these together and they are not the same claim.

We already see that. Higher income people consume more services. Services tend to be high labor share. Again, that can always flip in the future but this is the evidence we have."

  8. When the labor reports are not good, and you’re having difficulty finding a job, consider applying to smaller companies.

It’s not always true, but it’s frequently true that small business owners care more about their employees, compared to big business management teams.

There are a lot of small businesses, and there’s a lot of variation in the quality of the leadership teams. Your mileage may vary, let the buyer beware, look before you leap, and all that. But when you remember what average means – half of the small businesses are above average, so you’ve got a decent chance.

I remember one auto insurance office where my wife worked. It was a small office with two agents and four customer care people. One time I was talking to the owner and he told me about the pressure he felt: “I’m not just providing for my family, but by running this business I’m providing for six families. When business slows down, it weighs on me heavily.” That man cared.

That’s very different than working for a CEO of a company with 2,000 employees who says, “Profits are down. Let’s lay off six percent of our staff.”
