John Cunningham Geikie, Presbyterian missionary, writes on women who oppressed the poor in Amos: the “kine”, or cows, of Bashan. Greedy for drink and luxury, they used tricks to get more money. Corrupt judges handed over honest men to debt slavery, even for a kickback as small as the price of shoes. The miserable even prevented from covering self in dust.
Is anything like that happening today?

Robert MacCulloch, Church of Scotland minister, on Isaiah 1:17. He says that God made a provision for orphans by the way that we are wired: we have a natural tendency to felicitous concern for welfare of own children, naturally transferable to others. Plus promises of blessings to helpers and curses to rebellious (or those w/o mercy).
Today some protect “order” by throwing cold water on this concern.
How can you help orphans today?
