Here's the latest variant picture for Australia.
JN.1 has been submerged by a scrum of new lineages, notably KW.1 and KW.1.1 and JN.1.32. KP.2 seems to have fallen back after peaking around 12%.
The recent data is mostly from South Australia and NSW, which might be distorting the picture.

CW: SARS-CoV-2 variant JN.1.* with Spike F456L and R346T mutations "FLiRT"
Convergent evolution has seen several SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineages of JN.1.* acquire the Spike F456L and R346T mutations aka "FLiRT".
Globally, JN.1.* + "FLiRT" is still showing a steady, strong growth advantage of 8% per day (58% per week) over other BA.2.86.* "Pirola" (including JN.1.*) samples, since February.
That predicts an imminent crossover.
-
CW: SARS-CoV-2 variant JN.1.* with Spike F456L and R346T mutations "FLiRT"
After a long lag, sample data was shared recently for Victoria (Australia). It has revealed that JN.1.* + "FLiRT" lineages have been growing strongly there, paralleling the growth reported earlier in South Australia. Very recent data from both states shows the frequency up to around 22%.
The rapid growth of new lineages implies an increased reinfection risk, for those relying on immunity from a prior infection.

CW: SARS-CoV-2 variant JN.1.* with Spike F456L and R346T mutations "FLiRT"
Convergent evolution has seen several SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineages of JN.1.* acquire the Spike F456L and R346T mutations aka "FLiRT".
The designated lineages so far are JN.1.16.1, KP.1.1.*, KP.2.*, KR.1, KS.1 and KU.2. So 6 different evolutionary paths to arrive at the same advantageous combination, in just a few months.
Our collective global variant evolution engine (featuring billions of infections with millions of chronic infections) is efficiently churning along, providing endless surprises.
From the available data, it seems the first wave of the JN.1.* + "FLiRT" lineages started in Nigeria (43%) and India (29%) during February. Note the end of those series in late February is currently the end of all available sample data from those countries, so JN.1.* + "FLirt" lineages are likely more dominant there by now.
The second wave was in Japan (34%) and Singapore (26%) in early March.
Now a broader global wave appears to have started in mid-March, with multiple countries reporting growth in the JN.1.* + "FLiRT" lineages.
The first chart shows the 9 leading countries by volume, the 2nd chart shows the next 9.

The JN.1.* + "FLiRT" lineages have been most successful in Japan (30%) and Singapore (23%).
The frequency in the United States has grown to 16%. For recent dates (roughly March 8 onwards), "community transmission" (non-travel related) samples are now the majority.
