I think one must engage in politics — using the word in a wide sense — and that one must have preferences: that is, one must recognise that some causes are objectively better than others, even if they are advanced by equally bad means. As for the nationalistic loves and hatreds that I have spoken of, they are part of the make-up of most of us, whether we like it or not. Whether it is possible to get rid of them I do not know, but I do believe that it is possible to struggle against them, and that this is essentially a moral effort. It is a question first of all of discovering what one really is, what one’s own feelings really are, and then of making allowance for the inevitable bias.

One has to remember that the ‘press’ in the UK is largely foreign owned and predominantly right wing. The mainstream media is exactly what is says, state media with little interest in questioning whatever administration is in place normally.

A quotation from George Orwell
By “nationalism” I mean first of all the habit of assuming that human beings can be classified like insects and that whole blocks of millions or tens of millions of people can be confidently labeled “good” or “bad.” But secondly — and this is much more important — I mean the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests.

NiemanLab: Nine months later, that body of water down south is still the “Gulf of Mexico” to news outlets. “The news cycle has very much moved on; Trump leaves reporters no shortage of things to write about. But I wanted to check in and see how much ‘Gulf of America’ had stuck in news media. The answer is: not very much.”

A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt
Nevertheless, the fact remains that exactly as true patriots should be especially jealous of any appeal to what is base under the guise of patriotism, so men who strive for honesty, and for the cleansing of what is corrupt in the dark places of our politics, should emphatically disassociate themselves from the men whose antics throw discredit upon the reforms they profess to advocate.
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901-1909)

The thing that is the problem here isn't actually patriotism, though it masks itself as such.
It's the "my country, right or wrong" jingoism that calls itself patriotism, but which actually substitutes for rational thought. It serves as a litmus test to "other" anyone who doesn't believe in the innate and permanent superiority of a country and its people over everyone else.
It's what's responsible for a lot of what's going on in the developing hell to our south.
Real patriotism is concerned with how we treat everyone - our less fortunate citizens and the other peoples of the world. It is concerned with our values, our morals, our ethics. It is about being proud of our good deeds, without shying away from turning a critical eye to the ones where we did not meet our own high standards.
I worry about this sudden outbreak of jingoism in Canada as well. We're not "better than everyone else WOO" like USAnians, but this is not a good portent.

They are also found all over the semi rural areas of WA, OR and ID..
Sort of my native region so I know it to be true. Can't speak to the southwestern states, but would be surprised if #Nazis were not found there as well. They seem to be everywhere..
Decades of #theofascist assault on Public Ed. & media, coupled with generational poverty and #racism, too many #Guns, #2A fetishes and #jingoism
Sigh...

☝️ “Why is #China promoting patriotic education?”
Is it really #patriotism to support genodical, military-expansionist, never-elected #dictatorship that deprives even its own subject population of basic civic rights while indoctrinating 'the masses' to hate foreign enemies?
Wouldn't actual #Chinese patriots want Chinese people and its genocidally colonized neighbours to enjoy the #humanrights enshrined in the #UnitedNations human rights charter?
Is #Stauffenberg still considered a traitor rather than a patriot?
The #CCP regime uses #jingoism to prop up its illegitimate rule.
The 'Free World' has (mis)spent decades using #euphemisms whereas objective and rational observation must be built on facts.
And so, here we are in 2023, with #Putin and #XiJinping and their attempts to build a global #AxisOfDespots... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#WND (originally an initialism for #WorldNetDaily, or as it was affectionately known to its fans as WingNutDaily or WhirledNutDaily) is a far-right webshite founded by the impressively mustachioed Joseph Farah in 1997 as a project of his "Western Center for Journalism". The site espouses a #fundamentalist, #Christian, #creationist worldview with a healthy dose of #jingoism, and its coverage provides multiple sides of issues: the very #conservative viewpoint and the ultra-conservative viewpoint. Basically, it makes Fox News look positively moonbatty in comparison.
While they present themselves as news, WND is basically a tabloid for radical right-wingers. Their publishing standards are rock-bottom, and they have run stories from extremely questionable sources on many, many occasions. It's also one of the earliest and longest-running publishers of Ann Coulter's insipid columns…

Now, I for one detest Imperialism, but I have a great deal of sympathy with Jingoism. And there seemed something so touching about this unbroken and innocent bragging... It is so obvious and so jolly to be optimistic about England, especially when you are an optimist—and an Englishman.
