  1. Randy Newman, Little Criminals, 1977 on Warner Bros

Randy Newman’s fifth studio LP and his highest charting, in part due to “Short People,” which was also a hit single. Produced by Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman, with supporting players including Waddy Wachtel, Joe Walsh, Glen Frey, J.D. Souther, Tim Schmit, Klaus Voorman, Jim Keltner, Willie Weeks, and even Ry Cooder on mandola on “Kathleen.”

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a Bestway pressing, with some price sticker damage on the front from a previous owner.

  5. John Hiatt, Bring the Family, 1987 on A&M

John Hiatt’s eighth studio album and his first on A&M. What a fantastic songwriter! Actually paid for by Demon Records in the UK, but picked up after being completed by A&M in the US.

Guests include Ry Cooder (doing harmony vocals on “Have a Little Faith in Me” as well as electric guitar and sitar work), Nick Lowe on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums, making this something of a proto-Little Village album. Also includes “Thing Called Love” that was later a hit for Bonnie Raitt.

My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a Columbia House club pressing (Carrollton) with CRC on the bottom of the rear cover.

  9. #MorningCoffeeAlbum

    Little Village - self titled

A band combining the talents of Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner, Little Village only produced this album. It has some great tracks. I particularly like She Runs Hot (I'll put a YT link in a reply)

  14. Ry Cooder, Borderline, 1980 on Warner Bros.

Cooder’s 9th studio solo LP, with John Hiatt, Jim Keltner, Jesse Harms, George Pierre, Bobby King, Willie Green Jr., Reggie McBride, and Tim Drummond. Produced by Cooder with Leslie Morris.

Personally I don’t quite love this one as much as 1978’s Jazz, but it is a really sold album including a cover of John Hiatt’s “The Way We Make a Broken Heart” and Eddie Floyd / Steve Cropper’s “634-5789” (first recorded by Wilson Pickett).

The album cover seems to be a painting by Ruano Llopis (you can make out the end of a signature in the bottom left) but is not credited anywhere from what I can tell.

My copy via Bull Moose Records in Portsmouth NH

  17. Von einem herrlichen Album (auf dem auch bemerkenswert ist, was Jim Keltner am Schlagzeug so alles treibt), das ich fast vergessen hatte: Ry Cooder - UFO Has Landed in the Ghetto

*note to self: weitere Ry-Cooder-Alben erwerben*
