"Jarmusch’s latest film, Father Mother Sister Brother (2025), is his fifth screen collaboration with Waits (or sixth, counting the score he composed for Night on Earth, 1991). He leads the first episode of this triptych film as “Father,” a brazen hustler and absent parent. At the start, Father is tidying up before a visit from his adult children, Jeff (Adam Driver) and Emily (Mayim Bialik); he disturbs the tastefully arranged decor of his living room and kitchen, a confounding ritual soon revealed to be his usual “show” of financial precarity and pitifulness, a way of pressuring Jeff into giving him money. When Emily, the more suspicious of the two siblings, notices a Rolex on his wrist, he insists that it is a “fugazi” and delicately pulls down his sleeve to hide it. Waits’s nervous hand and clenched teeth are disarming, building a comedic sense of suspense—but it does not take long before he regains his composure, his classic Waits cool, and starts scheming again. At one point, Emily asks if he is on any medications, and, instead of a simple no, he drawls a gravelly, wry litany of all sorts of recreational drugs that he has definitely not taken. Once she clarifies that the question actually pertains to prescriptions, he replies, “You think I should?” His aloof line delivery inspires both chuckles and pathos in equal measure. By the segment’s finale, we see Waits now dressed in a suave YSL suit—Saint Laurent Productions backed the film—about to go court a lady friend in his vintage car."

Brugte en aften forleden i selskab med #ThePhoenicianScheme. Jeg er forholdsvist stor fan af mærkelige film, og #WesAnderson falder rimelig solidt i den kategori. Det gør #JimJarmusch også, men det er vist en post for sig selv. Anyway, fantastisk film. Eller mood piece. Eller kunstværk. Jeg ved ikke helt hvad jeg skal kalde det, men det var flot og underholdende. Er vild med hans cinematografi og farvevalg. Det er bare så forbandet lækkert! :-)

Just re-watched Only Lovers Left Alive buried under a pile of blankets.
Eight watched it with his ex Leigh when he fucked off to Madison, WI for eight months by mistake once, it was one of her favorite movies. Leigh was a hottttt mess, but she had great taste in movies for some reason, and Only Lovers is no exception. It’s a Jim Jarmusch film and every single goddamn frame is a work of art. I love movies and TV, Eight did not, so I remember Leigh having to practically beg, borrow, and steal to get him to watch it. It was worth it, though, and now it’s our favorite vampire movie. Well worth the watch, in my opinion.

Moderator Les Levine masterfully guides panelists William S. Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, Timothy Leary and Brion Gysin. Listen to them re-imagining science fiction and foreseeing a culture yet to come.
The Nova Convention was a three-day event, taking place in New York City on November 30, December 1 and December 2, 1978. Intended as a homage to William S. Burroughs, the “convention” included seminars, music performances, readings and more. Attending were an odd mixture of academics, publishers, writers, artists, punk rockers and counterculture disciples. The event had a small hitch. The organizers had announced Keith Richards’ attendance, which made the event a sellout. Richards’ last minute cancellation, however, gave the event an antagonistic oscillation between performer and audience.
The series was originally produced by Giorno Poetry Systems for WBAI radio. The 2013 restoration comes from John Giorno’s private tapes. In this the legendary 1978 Nova Convention, we hear interviews with organizer/poet John Giorno, followed by the uncut Nova Convention panel discussion unheard for decades. Moderator Les Levine masterfully guides panelists William S. Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, Timothy Leary and Brion Gysin. Listen to them re-imagining science fiction and foreseeing a culture yet to come.
The Nova Convention was a three-day event, taking place in New York City on November 30, December 1 and December 2, 1978. Intended as a homage to William S. Burroughs, the “convention” included seminars, music performances, readings and more. Attending were an odd mixture of academics, publishers, writers, artists, punk rockers and counterculture disciples. The event had a small hitch. The organizers had announced Keith Richards’ attendance, which made the event a sellout. Richards’ last minute cancellation, however, gave the event an antagonistic oscillation between performer and audience.
The series was originally produced by Giorno Poetry Systems for WBAI radio. The 2013 restoration comes from John Giorno’s private tapes.
