  1. Asphalt Excursion

    In small towns south
    of Milwaukee, days
    disappear like dreams
    on snowy winter nights.

    Red maple and sassafras
    release turning foliage—
    a signal of nature’s
    seasonal changes.

    Stopping for an evening
    meal, I slit the envelope
    postmarked Paris, confident
    you miss these moments

    as the restaurant’s speakers
    sing Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”
    from an oldies station
    out of Racine, Wisconsin.

    Imagine a tangerine sunset
    filled with intimate secrets.

  2. Flame of Remembrance

    I linger over
    hot coffee
    at the café
    on an avenue
    in Dover
    as a northerly
    wind wails
    in dimming
    light under
    a lopsided moon
    while I remain
    captivated
    by the soft echoes
    of the wind,
    captivated
    by your faded
    photo as memory
    erases the time
    I held your hand.

  3. Chance Meeting

    The June evening
    acquires a silence
    as a crescent moon
    emerges above sassafras
    and white pine as early
    evening shadows
    restore my memories—
    forgotten afternoons
    when we stood
    in shifting light
    a hundred miles
    from the country
    station and pointlessly
    questioned why
    we never kissed.

  4. Retreat From Serenity

    At the far edges
    of Nebraska corn
    fields, billowing
    clouds gather before
    lightning displays
    its vengeance
    in a distant county,
    prepares to uproot
    nearby plowed grain
    fields as a porchlight
    two doors west
    blinks its warning
    as the morning sky
    quickly transforms
    into licorice.

  5. Where I Seldom Visit

    I am fascinated
    by fragments
    of silence
    as I circle back
    to this rarely visited
    field where walnut’s
    thinning branches
    reveal flashes
    of vivid lightning
    followed in seconds
    by the sound
    of thunder breaking
    my trance as darkness
    smothered the town.
    Tonight I remember
    the rainy afternoon
    we parked in Walmart’s
    parking lot and
    etched hearts
    on steamed windows
    as lightning lit up
    New Hampshire skies.

  6. Silent Hour

    Southbound
    on Route 101
    light shimmers
    through
    pointed fir
    as a red-eyed
    dawn awakens
    this north
    country town
    as my restless
    yearning steals
    morning’s breath.
    It’s hours like this
    when I recall
    our breakfasts
    at Madden’s.

  7. Notes From Nebraska

    You don’t need
    to reveal
    whispered secrets
    drafted under
    cracks of thunder
    or disappearing
    with your valentine
    on a train trip west
    or visiting
    small towns
    in a white convertible
    under the comfort
    of familiar shadows
    since you no longer
    remember the prairie.

  8. Somewhere Else Daffodils Are Blooming

    Yesterday we forgot
    to cover the woodpile
    that’s now buried
    in a five-foot drift.

You ask if we’ll see grass
before May, and I doubt it,
    but we do have photos
    of roses taken last season.

    At night the furnace hums
    like it’s happy to burn
    fuel, but tonight we
    await the season of cooling.

    Somewhere else the sun
    is shining, the temps
    in the high eighties,
    the humidity level high.

    Someone forgot the theme
    of this narrative. You recall
    my favorite hot chocolate
    flavor without asking.
