  1. RE: hachyderm.io/@norootcause/1168

Enjoyable read. In my field of #academic research, I think this is why it’s harder to write a review paper than an original research paper, broadly speaking (there are exceptions). A meaningful review of a topic, is not just a review of the literature. I was once taught by my mentor at #JHU that to do just that is creating a “book report”. He said a good review tells us something meaningful and new that the author synthesizes from their expert knowledge of the grander picture. #Academia

  19. Happy Grad School Graduation anniversary to me. 🎓

Some years ago in Baltimore I finally put grad school in my rear-view mirror. I had worked 20+ part-time and 3 full-time jobs to get there. I treated myself to two ceremonies: one for Johns Hopkins and one for Peabody Conservatory.

An unexpected highlight was getting to meet James Van Allen, discoverer of Earth’s radiation belts. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by JHU that day so, in a way, he’s my classmate.

    🍾 Semper sint in flore!

  36. New paper out: Subplate neurons are very important for development, but seem to form a heterogenous cell population. Here Minzi shows that the sub-populations of subplate neurons vary between primary sensory areas pointing to a specialization of subplate and suggesting that different populations of subplate neurons might contribute differently to the development of individual sensory circuits.

  37. New results out: Zac & Kelson looked at order and disorder in the functional representations in the auditory cortex. On large scales, there are tonotopic maps, but on small scales, neighboring cells can be tuned very differently. To reconcile this, they imaged 3D volumes and found that there is a fractured columnar small-world functional network organization.
