When the disappointment and anger about #jhope and #rm attending a Chris Brown concert started hitting the internet, I realized I had zero idea who Chris Brown is or what he has done in the past. It’s not that I have been living under a rock per se, my brain just filters out information related to celebrities for the most part.
But as I’d been enjoying some radiant dopamine from hanging around #BTS ARMY circles, I also found myself paying attention to all things BTS and actually absorbing some celebrity information and thus when folks started getting upset, I started to do some reading to see who Chris Brown is and what he did.
News articles talk about Chris Brown as someone “whose career has been marked by allegations and legal controversies.” That is the nicest most spin-laden way I have ever seen anyone say “Chris Brown has so many assault charges that there’s an entire Wikipedia page dedicated just to them.”
Even if you believe that only the ones he was convicted of are true and the rest are allegations, that’s still a number greater than zero and given that his first conviction was over him beating his girlfriend Rihanna to the point where she required hospitalization, it’s pretty obvious to me why a fandom that is 80% women would feel a certain way about two of the members going to his concert and hanging out with him backstage.
The other thing I’ve seen said is that folks are waiting to hear what RM and J-Hope have to say about the situation and I feel like the time for that is drawing to a close. This is a band that is perpetually online, perpetually interacting with their fans. The likelihood they don’t know their fans are hurt and angry is almost certainly nonexistent at this point. Unless they decide to say and do something pretty substantial, that silence is what folks are going to remember and it seems to be what they have to say about it and that sucks.
