The song "BaShana Haba'a" is stuck in my head.
My dad asked me the same question every year, months before the holiday. Are you coming to the dinner?
It took moving an ocean away to understand he was never really asking about dinner.

ICYMI 🍎🍯
Your English Bible does not call this holiday Rosh Hashanah. Neither does Leviticus. Neither does Numbers.
The phrase turns up in the entire Hebrew Bible exactly once, in Ezekiel, and there it is not the name of a holiday at all.
That is where my newest article starts, and it only gets better from there. Why a beginning in Hebrew is a "head," and what that quietly asks of your year. Why the word for year also means both to repeat and to change. What the shofar blast actually is, and why it is not music. And why we dip apples in honey rather than any other sweet fruit on earth.
Four words. Four things your translation left out.

Hebrew has one word that means both “to repeat” and “to change.” 🍎🍯
It is the word for year.
Sit with that for a second. The thing that comes back around, unchanged, same date, same season, same you one year older, is called by the same word we use for becoming something different.
Nothing new is being handed to you. Same kitchen, same job, same people at the table. And that is not the disappointing part. That is the design. The repetition is the only material you have to change with.
That is one of four Hebrew words I open in my newest article, along with why a beginning in Hebrew is a “head,” what the shofar blast actually is, and why we dip apples in honey rather than any other sweet fruit.

Rosh Hashanah is not in the Bible. 🍎
At least, not by that name. Open Leviticus and you find a day of teruah. Open Numbers and you find the same. The words Rosh Hashanah appear in the entire Hebrew Bible exactly once, in Ezekiel, and there they are not the name of a holiday at all.
So where did the name come from, and what do these words actually mean?
In my new video I open the four Hebrew words at the center of this season. Why a beginning in Hebrew is a “head.” Why the word for year also means both to repeat and to change. What the shofar blast really is. And why we dip apples, specifically apples, in honey.
