  2. Great Synagogue of Vilna: Central Bimah Fully Unearthed in Landmark Archaeological Discovery

The Great Synagogue of Vilna, once the spiritual heart of Lithuanian Jewry, is gradually revealing its history once again. Archaeologists have now fully uncovered the synagogue’s monumental central bimah, together with new sections of the prayer hall and remarkable evidence of the vibrant Jewish community that flourished here for centuries before the building’s destruction during the twentieth century.

The heart of the synagogue revealed

The excavations, carried out by the Israel Antiquities Authority in partnership with Lithuania’s Kultūros paveldo išsaugojimo pajėgos, focused on the remains of the Great Synagogue of Vilna, closely associated with the renowned Vilna Gaon.

Destroyed first by the Nazi regime and later demolished under Soviet rule, the synagogue remained hidden beneath a school building for decades. Its recent removal has allowed archaeologists, for the first time, to expose extensive portions of the building’s central spaces.

Among the most significant discoveries are the monumental bimah, the main prayer hall, the women’s gallery, and beautifully preserved terrazzo floors decorated with geometric and floral motifs.

    The names of worshippers preserved

One of the excavation’s most moving discoveries consists of dozens of inscribed seating plaques identifying the permanent places reserved for worshippers.

Some belonged to women who prayed in the ezrat nashim, while others identified male worshippers and members of important charitable societies responsible for administering the Jewish community of Vilna.

Particularly noteworthy is a plaque commemorating a seat donated by Gitel Klachek, wife of the late Yechezkel, who served as the city’s shamash, or synagogue sexton responsible for practical and communal affairs. Historical records indicate that the Klachek family was among the city’s prominent Jewish families.

Evidence of centuries of religious life

Excavators also uncovered a small metal plaque engraved with the Ten Commandments, together with additional artefacts illustrating the religious and communal life that once centred on the synagogue and the surrounding Shulhoyf complex.

Archaeological investigations at the site began in 2011 and have now reached their sixth excavation season. The long-term project aims to preserve the synagogue’s remains, make them accessible to visitors, and safeguard one of Europe’s most important Jewish heritage sites.

According to the excavation directors, the newly exposed remains provide an almost personal connection with the generations of men and women who gathered here in prayer over several centuries.

    Recovering a lost cultural landmark

The complete exposure of the central bimah marks a major milestone in the restoration and interpretation of the Great Synagogue of Vilna. Beyond its archaeological importance, the discovery represents a powerful act of historical remembrance, restoring part of the cultural identity of a Jewish community that was nearly erased during the Holocaust and the Soviet era.

As excavation and conservation continue, the site is expected to become an important place of memory, education and public engagement, preserving one of Eastern Europe’s most significant Jewish monuments.

Google Calendar users are angrily calling the company out after noticing that certain events like #Pridemonth are no longer highlighted by default in Google calendar. #BlackHistoryMonth, #IndigenousPeopleMonth, #JewishHeritage, #HolocaustRemembranceDay, and #HispanicHeritage have also been removed

Google, "Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world. We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable..."

  16. I'm in the middle of marking up the latest article for the #DiversityProject of the #Bywgraffiadur about the jeweller and trader Morris Wartski and there's the casual mention that the Marquess of Anglesey attended the lavish wedding of Wartski's daughter in 1903.

Doing the maths, it wasn't just any marquess, but *that* Marquess -- who was not only a good customer, but had also helped Wartski to set up his business.

Oh, to have been privy to the conversations of an observing man (who helped set up the first synagogue in Bangor!) and the man who makes David Bowie look like someone who wasn't trying hard enough.

In addition to admiring Dorothy Parker's wit and literary virtuosity, I feel linked to her because we are both....what term should I use?

-- "half jewish". Ugh, no! Observant Jews reject this term because the traditional rule is one is either a Jew through matrilineal descent or conversion or not a Jew The division is binary, so no third status exists. Even those Reform authorities who are prepared to consider patrilineal descent plus a Jewish upbringing as sufficient for community membership do not entertain associate membership; one either is or isn't a Jew. In addition, the term "half jew", with its undertones of mongrel pollution of pedigree, has more than a faint sound of antisemitism.

-- "of Jewish heritage". Hopelessly unspecific - does it apply to a person whose only known Jewish forebear was a great great grandfather? In addition, it is also unfortunately reminiscent of the use of the genteelism "Jewish person" instead of the supposedly offensive "Jew" , similar to the replacement of the blunt "die" by "pass". So no to that one too!

-- "of patrilineal Jewish decent". Accurate, but a horrible mouthful that sounds like a piece of medico-legal terminology rather than everyday English. I suppose, however, it's the best I can think of right now; if you have any better suggestions, please put them in replies to this post!

    But wait! There's more....

  18. This article in Harper's about being a Jew in Auschwitz in 2024 is so important for non-Jews to read.

    harpers.org/archive/2024/09/my

Please my non-Jewish friends who talk about the Holocaust, read it and spread it.

It speaks to how European "Jewish Heritage Sites" and "Holocaust Memorials" make a spectacle about Judaism, but they often rely on the same antisemitic tropes that Jews deal with today, how non-Jews are happy to talk about the Holocaust but don't want to deal with real Jews, and the reality of being an actual living Jew.

If you get even more curious about this phenomenon, please read "People Love Dead Jews" by Dara Horn.

It also speaks to the way Poland has worked so hard to rewrite its own history, to make itself both the victim and the saviors.
