Judas Iskariot
De dood van Judas Iskariot (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Den Haag)Mijn goede vriend Richard attendeerde me onlangs op een kort filmpje waarin een franciscaner monnik het revolutionaire karakter van het christendom beter samenvatte dan ik ooit eerder hoorde. Kijk, zei de man, niets is makkelijker dan te houden van Jezus. Die geneest mensen, doet wonderen en lijdt in jouw plaats. Iedereen zou sympathie voelen voor zo’n weldoener. Een goede christen, zo zei de monnik, voelt echter eveneens sympathie voor Judas. Ik heb nooit een oudhistoricus zó scherp horen uitleggen hoe vernieuwend het christendom is geweest.
Wat weten we echter over Judas, behalve dat zijn naam inmiddels synoniem is voor verraad? U raadt het al: we weten niet veel. Eigenlijk maar twee dingen. Eén: Judas behoorde tot Jezus’ inner circle, de Twaalf: de mannen dus die, na de grote kosmische ommekeer die Jezus en zijn volgelingen verwachtten, leiding zouden moeten geven aan het herstelde Israël. Twee: Judas leverde Jezus uit aan de autoriteiten in Jeruzalem. Aan die twee stukjes informatie kunnen we toevoegen dat de auteurs van het Nieuwe Testament al onzeker waren over Judas’ beweegredenen.
Iskariot
Daarover zo meteen meer. Eerst de naam. Niemand weet wat Iskariot betekent. Eén theorie kunnen we meteen terzijde schuiven: dat het een Aramese verbastering zou zijn van het Latijnse sicarii, “dolkmannen”. Dit is taalkundig onmogelijk. Nog onzinniger is de vervolghypothese dat Judas, behorende tot de stroming der sicariërs, een zeloot zou zijn geweest. De zeloten duiken in de geschiedenis pas op ten tijde van de belegering van Jeruzalem.
Iets minder implausibel zijn verwijzingen naar de Aramese woorden šqr, “liegen”, en skr, “uitleveren”, maar het veronderstelt dat we te maken hebben met een later gegeven bijnaam, waarvan de evangelisten niet meer wisten wat die betekende, zodat ze er een persoonsnaam van maakten. Erg waarschijnlijk is het niet, want de evangelist Johannes vertelt dat ook Judas’ vader, die Simon heette, werd aangeduid als Iskariot.noot O.a. Johannes 13.2. De vader zou dus eveneens een slechte reputatie hebben gehad.
De minst slechte papieren heeft de verklaring dat Judas afkomstig was uit het dorpje Keriot, dat we kennen uit de IJzertijd.noot Jozua 15.25. Het is bij deze hypothese wel verondersteld dat dit dorpje na de zevende eeuw v.Chr. nog altijd bestond, en dat het al die tijd dezelfde naam heeft behouden.
Uitlevering
Wat bewoog Judas? Zoals gezegd wisten de evangelisten het al niet meer. De eerste van het viertal, Marcus, geeft althans geen verklaring.
Toen ging Judas Iskariot, een van de twaalf, naar de hogepriesters om Jezus aan hen uit te leveren.noot Marcus 14.10; NBV21.
Nu denkt u misschien: Judas vroeg toch om betaling, er waren toch dertig zilverstukken mee gemoeid? Maar geldzucht speelde geen rol bij Judas’ besluit naar de tempelautoriteiten te gaan. Het staat er simpelweg niet. Even later is er wel sprake van geld:
Toen de hogepriesters dit hoorden, waren ze opgetogen en beloofden ze hem geld te zullen geven.noot Marcus 14.11.
Beleefd als ze waren beloonden de hogepriesters Judas, maar geldelijk gewin was, althans in het Marcusevangelie, niet diens motief. De evangelist Lukas introduceert wél een motief: Satan had zich van Judas meester gemaakt.noot Lukas 22.3. De evangelist Matteüs introduceert eveneens een motief, en wel door de financiën niet het gevolg van Judas’ aanbod te laten zijn maar een voorwaarde:
Daarop ging een van de Twaalf, namelijk Judas Iskariot, naar de hogepriesters en zei: “Wat krijg ik van u als ik hem aan u uitlever?” Ze betaalden hem dertig zilverstukken.noot Matteüs 26.14-15.
Dit is een latere aanpassing van de oorspronkelijke informatie en de historicus mag het in principe negeren. In geschiedwetenschappelijk jargon: ten opzichte van Marcus is Matteüs elimineerbaar.
Desondanks is niet ondenkbaar dat Matteüs het bij het rechte einde heeft, want de evangelist Johannes insinueert iets soortgelijks. Hij vertelt namelijk dat Judas de beheerder was van de gemeenschappelijke kas van Jezus’ volgelingen en dat hij daaruit stal.noot Johannes 12.6. Twee bronnen zijn meer dan één, maar het kan natuurlijk zijn dat de eerste christenen zich al afvroegen wat Judas’ motivatie was, en dat er consensus groeide dat, aangezien geldzucht de wortel was van alle kwaad,noot 1 Timoteüs 6.10. financiële motieven wel een rol zouden hebben gespeeld.
Dood
Merk overigens op dat Judas alleen wordt gepresenteerd als informant – hij wordt nergens gepresenteerd als iemand die aanstuurt op een executie. De interpretatie die u misschien kent uit Jesus Christ Superstar, dat Judas wilde verhinderen dat de zaken uit de hand liepen, is niet onmogelijk. Maar we weten het feitelijk niet. Niettemin: de aanname dat Judas slechts als informant optrad, verklaart waarom Matteüs schrijft dat Judas zelfmoord pleegde nadat hij Jezus met een kus had geïdentificeerd en niet slechts de arrestatie maar ook de executie mogelijk had gemaakt. De woorden van Matteüs suggereren dat dit laatste niet de opzet was.
Toen Judas … zag dat Jezus ter dood veroordeeld was, kreeg hij berouw. Hij bracht de dertig zilverstukken naar de hogepriesters en oudsten terug en zei: “Ik heb een zonde begaan door een onschuldige uit te leveren.”
Maar zij zeiden: “Wat gaat ons dat aan? Zie dat zelf maar op te lossen!”
Toen smeet hij de zilverstukken de tempel in, vluchtte weg en verhing zich.noot Matteüs 27.3-5.
De auteur van de Handelingen van de apostelen meent echter dat Judas van de beloning voor zijn schanddaad een stuk grond kocht,
maar bij een val werd zijn buik opengereten, zodat zijn ingewanden naar buiten kwamen.noot Handelingen 1.18.
Ik weet dat middeleeuwse kunstenaars, zoals te zien in het plaatje hierboven, de stervende Judas afbeeldden met ingewanden die uit z’n buik springen door de schok waarmee de ongelukkige zich verhing. Zo kun je alles wel combineren. De historicus constateert de tegenspraak en accepteert dat hij het weer eens niet weten kan. De gelovige weet daarnaast dat hij niet alleen van Jezus maar ook van Judas moet houden, maar over die ethiek heeft de historicus, althans professioneel, geen oordeel.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
im Hangar 4 Tempelhof Berlin war atemberaubend. Dass das mehr als 50jährige Stück so gut gealtert ist, hätte ich nicht gedacht. Die Musik ist zum großen Teil unerwartet roh und rockig und wird in dieser opulenten Inszenierung sowohl genial gesungen als auch gespielt (was für ein Gitarrist... 😍).
