  1. CW: transphobia in NYT

“Singal’s latest piece, ‘Medical Associations Trusted Belief Over Science on Youth Gender Care,’ is riddled with misleading claims, glaring omissions, and sources drawn directly from anti-trans hate groups.”

  3. some weird shit going down on #bluesky

so there's this #transphobe named #JesseSingal who joined and their account became the most blocked account on bluesky in 12 days

people demanded the account be nuked

but the true weirdness is how the CEO #JayGraber is having a bad reaction to the drama. some blithe emotional displacement with... waffles?

anyway, come to #mastodon #fediverse everyone

we have plenty of #drama too

but any server can suspend anyone

    true #decentralization

  5. "For the record: I think Jay Graber is a transphobe; I think there's just too much evidence in her behaviour to not read that into her actions at this point. No normal person would go out of their way to court Jesse Singal."

  7. With apologies, I read a #JesseSingal piece. The usual stuff. Our boy combs through trans rights writing to find brief paraphrases which, in indulgent long paragraphs, he attempts to portray as grave mistakes that compel him to assert the authors have no clue what they're talking about! 1/

  8. During the recent #JesseSingal controversy, we have seen how the #Bluesky moderation team has failed to take effective action against a notorious transphobe.

Beyond the lack of surprise, we should also note that this lack of action is something that got quite a few #Fediiverse instance defederated. While Bluesky itself is obviously not an ActivityPub-based system, we _can_ connect to them via services such as brid.gy. But should we?

Obviously, everyone needs to decide what they are comfortable with, and what they consider to be vital for the safety of themselves and others on their instance. A domain block of bsky.brid.gy is entirely understandable and reasonable under these circumstances. But what about those who use it to connect to Bluesky?

Personally, while I will not open up an account on Bluesky itself, I do use brid.gy and will continue to do so. I think it is important to show the world - including Bluesky - that we on the Fediverse are out there, are active, and worth following. And if some Bluesky readers realize that interacting with me and others around here will be much more comfortable if they also open up an account on the Fediverse, then so much the better.

However, I am also responsible for any posts I _share_ from Bluesky, just as I am responsible for anything else I post. I have absolutely no intention of sharing (say) pro-TERF propaganda, for instance - but anyone who shares content from Bluesky that is actively harmful to others deserves to be reported and blocked or banned if appropriate.

So, what are _your_ thoughts on using connectors for connecting with Bluesky?

  10. You can hate #JesseSingal but that doesn't mean you get to harass him. Trust & safety must apply to everyone. If they aren't violating laws or pushing cruel or untrue speech on others, we have to let them post it. On decentralized systems without corporate algos, we won't see what we didn't ask for anyway. Big social media platforms like #bluesky actually create this question of who gets network access by using a centralized design for greater profit. Dialogue suffers.

  12. ToDo: poach users from over the controversy...

  13. This paragraph is especially good:

“From a purely self-interested, business-focused perspective, I think Bluesky would be better off catering to that audience of people who are sick of assholes and who are sick of watching assholes experience no consequences. And I think that taking a hard stand against assholes will be a lot more likely to convince that large and grossly under-served audience to pay Bluesky for things like subscriptions and domain verification services.”

  15. In the wake of the #JesseSingal controversy, the #Bluesky moderation team have clarified their perspective.

It's... not great. And gives me further reason to stick to the #Fediverse .

  17. Watching #bluesky deal with the arrival of folks like #JesseSingal is going to be interesting. I don't think they are designed to handle it well. We are. There could be a maga.social and everybody could choose to block it or use a server that doesn't federate with it. Over there, it's going to be endless war and hypocrisy re why anti right abuse is allowed but anti left harassment isn't. They actually want their network to feel like a "home" but that implies you get to kick out "assholes".

  19. It's been four days since I realized that #JesseSingal had cited my blog post in one of his podcast episodes--motherfucker must be really scrapping the bottom for such a niche thing to be outrage fodder.

At any rate, past me did me a solid when, in all her glorious ignorance, set up moderation for all first time commenters. It's even better than turning comments off. They get to rant into the abyss.

If you missed it, this is what has them frothing at the mouth:

  21. I'm also idly wondering how come that motherfucker has a dot org website, for his vanity project right wing white supremacists outrage podcast.

Gah, I'm probably going to have to turn comments off in that post at least.

Note: every so often I get spikes of views on that post since it came up, as new readers find it through reddit, and generally nothing more happens, but this is #JesseSingal, and who knows how that fucker is framing the post (and me).

    ugh

  23. Good Jebus--#JesseSingal discovered my (year-and-a-half old) post on the ill-conceived and worse-executed plan to remake Worth's Peacock Dress, and I'm now one of the sources he links to in a recent 'premium' episode in his podcast. (I mention that it's premium because it's locked to paying subscribers, and Singal can rot in hell for eternity before I pay him one cent, and also, I can't tell what he says of me).

  25. I kinda love how #JesseSingal realized they screwed up and basically publicized #JamieReed tripping all over HIPAA to discredit the trans clinic for kids she worked for, and deleted their twitter account.

  27. Is anyone around here a lawyer who has been following the Jamie Reed "whistleblower" story? I want to know exactly what the HIPAA situation is. Fein what I understand, she:
    - accessed patient records for private purposes
    - copied patient data into an Excel spreadsheet
    - was caught by her bosses and told to delete the document but didn't
    - blacked over the names and DOBs of patients (and no other info - date of referral, fist/secund/third appt, and clinician's notes are all visible) and emailed it or a screenshot of it to Jesse Singal

    Exactly how screwed is she?
