  1. I planted some sunchokes yesterday (Helianthus tuberosus), and hope that was a good idea. They'll give me tall yellow flowers, and yummy tubers. As long as I can ensure they don't take over the world, it'll be great!

    Do you grow them?

  5. Jerusalem artichokes, native to North America, are nutty, earthy tubers unrelated to artichokes. Perfect for soups—roast and blend with garlic, onion, and thyme for a creamy, flavourful bowl. A great addition to your cold-weather menu! #JerusalemArtichoke #SeasonalCooking

  7. With the recent frosts my #Roselle & #JerusalemArtichoke plants are no more.

We do have loads of seeds from the Roselle, so we’ll do them again & we have a huge amount of chokes to eat. 👍

The only thing still going is my #PinkPanther #DragonFruit.

  10. It looks like I’ll be harvesting #JerusalemArtichoke again today as another plant has turned yellow & is pushing up tubers.

Maybe the next generation will manage to get some real height & show me their flowers.

  11. I just harvested the potted #JerusalemArtichoke that started to wither after the cool weather last week.

The others don’t appear to have been hit so hard & are looking healthy.

  12. 34° Celsius & I’m down.

I’ve been #hydrating all day, taking #electrolytes with some of my water, but I go outside, give the #alpacas & #lambs some lucerne, then water the #Roselle & #JerusalemArtichoke - the next minute liquids are #spewing (the operate word) out of my mouth & I lose all sense of balance.

Naked under the fan now, a bucket beside me if more liquid wants to rush up my throat.

    Where’s our rain?! Mutter mutter #auspol #gardening

  13. Some of the #JerusalemArtichoke have gone a darker shade of green.

I have no idea why. They are in the same soil/potting mix, they get the same amount of sun & watering.

    Hmm. #gardening

  14. #JerusalemArtichoke phase 2.

My better half did all the work, despite not feeling her best either.

  15. The #JerusalemArtichoke love the #shadecloth #tunnel.

#gardening we removed it to have a look at how the plants are going.

The artichokes that went into the potting mix bags as tubers have almost caught up with those repotted into bags as growing plants.

  16. Ready to grow a tasty & versatile crop? Plant Jerusalem artichokes in spring🥔 Plant tubers 4-6" deep, they'll thrive in most soils. ☀️ Enjoy nutty tubers in fall, great roasted, in soups, or even pickled! #permaculture #gardening #jerusalemartichoke

  18. The transplanted to potting mix bags #JerusalemArtichoke didn’t like the 35° #Celsius we eventually got to yesterday.

This morning they’ve been given a good soaking & are starting to recover.

It might hit 37° or 38° today, so I’ll check through the day.

The #Mudbrothers & the #Wiltipoll #lambs water troughs both went down around 5 inches overnight!

Troughs have been topped up & the #alpacas & #sheep have been fed.

    The town’s #CFA #fire #siren went earlier, but I think it’s just a drill.

  19. My original #JerusalemArtichoke pot minus 2 of the 3 tubers that were in it.

All that growth is from one #tuber!

  20. Got more #JerusalemArtichoke in the mail!

Outside now with my #Nata (Japanese gardening tool) next to the biggest chokes - I Have the rest that arrived today in a paper shopping bag.

  21. is a nice winter vegetable. When pretty much everything else in my garden is cold, wet and dead, I can go and dig up these big ol’ root crops and cook a nice warm soup 😋
I think Jerusalem artichoke is a weird term. I have no idea what they have to do with Jerusalem. They seem to have absolutely nothing to do with artichokes. The part of artichokes we eat is a flower, but these are roots, so completely opposite parts of their respective plants 🤷🏻‍♂️
    In Danish: jordskokker.

  23. "I want to break free"
The tubers of these flowers are delicious (they taste like artichoke), but my stomach unfortunately can't tolerate them, so I just admire the beauty.

  24. #SilentSunday with a busy #bee & a sunshiney #sunchoke bloom.

I grow a lot of them in large pots. I never plant these in ground because they'll spread too quickly & hard to contain in ground. I can control them better, in large & movable pots.

Also known as the Jerusalem artichoke plant - despite it not being from Jerusalem & it not being an artichoke. It was first cultivated by #IndigenousPeoples of North America.

  26. Food Mastodon I need your help again.

What do I do with those Jerusalem artichokes I grew? What's your favourite recipe for them?

I don't think I've ever cooked them before.
