  1. Jersey City Drank It First

The water in my glass this morning fell as rain over Morris County, some twenty-three miles west of my kitchen. It pooled behind a dam on the Rockaway River and came down to Jersey City by gravity, the way it has since 1904. It carries a trace of chlorine, as almost every American city's water does now. Mine got there first, on September 26, 1908. The chlorine arrived in the middle of a lawsuit, dosed toward two hundred thousand people without a public hearing, a statute, or a permission slip of any kind. The fight that followed is the closest thing this country has to a founding trial over what a government may add to everyone's glass. The question that trial settled is back. […]

  2. Rudy’s Library Is Open

The key to the public library in Monowi, Nebraska hangs on the wall of the town's only tavern, within reach of the bartender. Ask and she hands it over. Then the shed a few steps from the bar is yours for the afternoon: five thousand books and magazines, floor-to-ceiling shelves, and a sign painted by grandchildren on the side of an old refrigerator that reads Rudy's Library. There are no library cards and no overdue fines, and there is no librarian at a desk, because the librarian is the woman who just handed you the key. She is also the mayor. You borrow on honor and you return when you can. That is the whole system, and it has held for twenty-two years. […]

  7. Journal Square, Where the Library Only Takes Returns

On August 17, 2026, the Jersey City Free Public Library installed a book drop outside its Five Corners Branch at 678 Newark Avenue. The building behind it, sixty-nine years old and dark since early July, will accept what you give back. It will lend you nothing. A parking lot where a Bookmobile idles four days a week is now the whole of the public library in Journal Square, the neighborhood at the center of the loudest building boom in New Jersey's second-largest city. I live in this city. I have spent my working life writing, editing, and publishing books, and I can tell you what that steel drop says to a child walking past it on the way to school: the city will take from you, and the city has stopped giving. […]

  21. 😮 I just saw something that I thought had left #JerseyCity: a scrap truck. That is, a squeaky, bottomed-out pickup full of scrap metal making its way to the recycling facility. Scrap trucks had disappeared a while back, priced out of the neighborhood, but also victim to other more-prosperous ways to earn cash.

🤔 Guess things are getting bad enough that scrap trucks are back in vogue.
