  1. Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, Conscious Party, 1988 on Virgin

Third LP from Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, which included Stephen, Sharon and Cedella plus Ziggy, all children of Bob and Rita Marley (who also adds backing vocals). Guests include Jerry Harrison and Tina Weymouth. Chris Franz and Weymouth also produced.

Loved this album when it came out – fairly certain I had a copy on vinyl in 1988, but jah knows where it ended up. This copy—via the Worcester Record Riot—is a Specialty pressing (see the E A S T around the spindle hole) with the original printed inner liner.

  2. Talking Heads, Speaking in Tongues, 1983 on Sire

This was the fifth Talking Heads LP, produced by Talking Heads themselves rather than Brian Eno. It was the tour for this album which became Stop Making Sense, including their only US top 10 hit “Burning Down The House.”

What a killer album. In addition to “Burning Down The House” you’ve got “Making Flippy Floppy,” “Girlfriend is Better,” “Slipper People,” and “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).” The band is joined by Steve Scales, Bernie Worrell, Nona Hendry and Dolette McDonald, Alex Weir, Wally Badarou, Raphael Dejeesus and others.

My copy is a 2013 Rhino reissue – it is difficult to find original pressings of Talking Heads LPs in the wild that are reasonable and in good shape. But I think this reissue series is great in terms of consistency and quality – not necessarily advertised as “audiophile” but sounds great to me.

  3. The Modern Lovers, The Modern Lovers, 1976 on Beserkley

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers are part of the indie rock canon, especially here in greater Boston. They formed in Natick MA in 1970, and were active from 1970 to 1974, but most of their records came out later – this one in 1976.

Jerry Harrison (of Talking Heads) gets credit for piano, organ, and backing vocals, with Ernie Brooks playing bass, and David Robinson drums. John Cale produced six of the songs. That’s a gig poster for Gloucester High School auditorium on the rear cover.

Some legendary songs here – “Roadrunner” (which you may know via the Sex Pistol’s cover and after which a local venue is now named) and “Pablo Picasso” which has been covered by many people including David Bowie and Jack White.

My copy—via A1 records in NYC—is a later reissue (2009) by 4 Men With Beards on 180g vinyl.

  4. Talking Heads on the unifying pull of 'Stop Making Sense'

"Why has it been a long time?"
    "-Lives diverge."

"[T]here was something so special about the way we made music together; I've never found the same exact thing."

"[W]e really do appreciate how special our relationship musically was. I mean, you're trying to talk about conflicts, but conflicts are just human."
