Very sorry to hear that David Burke has passed away. Playing opposite the definitive Sherlock Holmes of Jeremy Brett, Burke helped redefine Dr. Watson away from the bungling-oaf caricature the character had previously become. His successor in the role, Edward Hardwicke, continued that trajectory beautifully.
Away from Baker Street, I also very much enjoyed Burke’s performance as the elderly butler Patten in A View from a Hill.

A chum reminded me that today would have been the birthday of the late Jeremy Brett. Brett, for my money, is still *the* finest screen incarnation of Sherlock Holmes.
Yes, I love the Rathbone films, but the Granada productions with Brett are just on another level and far truer to the spirit of the original stories.
Here in Edinburgh, local lad Conan Doyle has the greatest honour a Scotsman can have - a pub named after him!

Many years ago, in the mid 80’s, I discovered that listening to a #publicradio audio play of #SherlockHolmes could induce a wonderful, deep sleep, but have bits of the play inserted into dream fragments. Turns out that #UnintentionalSherlockHolmesASMR is a thing.
And yes, #JeremyBrett is still the best video or movie Sherlock. Happy to know the entire run is now on #YouTube

Since my youth I've loved a good #mystery & been a fan of #SherlockHolmes. I love the short stories & novels, & I also love the various versions made for the screen, including the Cumberbatch series, BUT my favorite portrayal of #Holmes is that by #JeremyBrett for the #BBC series begun in 1984. He is so good as Holmes & the episodes so well directed that they get my highest recommendation.

I made a video tribute to the late #JeremyBrett. He was my #sherlockholmes and the series was brilliant on many levels. Finding small clips to add revealed the immense creativity in the filming. I tried hard to honor it appropriately understanding I am one person. Feel free to leave comments on the show too.

I saw #ArthurConanDoyle's #Christmas #SherlockHolmes story, The Blue Carbuncle, twice last night: the 1968 BBC production with #PeterCushing as Holmes and the 1984 Granada version with #JeremyBrett .
Weirdly, Frank Middlemass was in both, as different characters.
Interesting to compare the choices made by the dramatists: both gave us unpleasant Countesses of Morcar, and cutaways to the sufferings of the wrongly arrested James Horner (a suicide attempt in '68, a tearful wife in '84) [continued]
