The Rt Hon Sir Jeffrey Donaldson was a knight, and a member of the UK's #PrivyCouncil. Procedures for ending both are routinely invoked when the title-holder gets a non-trivial prison sentence.

Jeffrey Donaldson was my local MP when I lived in Northern Ireland. I met him twice.

Once he turned up to give a talk to a dozen sixth formers at our Politics Society. He turned up flanked by two security guards dressed head to toe in black with earpieces and tasers.

On the second occasion I was there to raise an issue as a constituent and although he pretended to listen the piece of casework was never resolved.

I knew he was arrogant and useless, but these crimes against two children go far beyond anything else he got wrong. And he has put them through a torturous 2+ year legal process as adults by doubling down and pretending his conduct was above board.

Sentencing is due in September. They should lock him up for as long a time as being guilty on all counts allows. Well done to the victims and the jury for standing up to someone who thought he was above the law and proving him wrong.

Something that came up during the trial was the revelation that a religious organisation held some sort of mediation between Donaldson and his victim in the late 90s.

Obviously we don’t know the details, but it seems to me that this needs to be thoroughly investigated, to see if a Church was yet again involved in another child abuse cover-up.

On another occasion the same week, I was milling around in the reception area of Ulster Unionist headquarters after hours, waiting for a lift.

Donaldson was in and out of an empty meeting room, red-faced, absolutely furiously shouting down a phone about something or other. It was very uncomfortable to be there. He did not leave me with a good impression, even back then.
