XJ test drive went well. I've got a few loose ends to wrap up. I have to find new hardware to hold the exhaust together, install some little brackets that help route wiring, etc. Pretty excited though. Interestingly, I'm not seeing the power I was hoping for... not sure if the ECU needs time to adapt or if my exhaust (factory 2001 exhaust to the cat) is too restrictive, etc. I haven't done a WOT pull yet while the engine breaks in, so maybe that's part of it.

No photo but crank position sensor and those two crazy bolts at the top of the transmission housing are installed. I dare say that was there worst part.

Well... after assembling this other engine (after learning the TJ short block wont work well in my XJ), on a hunch, I checked the pushrod length - it seemed like there was excessive preload on the hydraulic lifters. Turns out, they were 0.200" too long.
I figure this difference is from the aftermarket (Hesco) head, and roller rockers. Either way, the correct rods are in the mail.

Engine update… trying to yank the old engine out. Exhaust manifold needed to but cut out. Transmission is largely unbolted except for two bolts. You probably know which ones… hoping to drop the transmission down a bunch tonight and get those bolts out. After that its just electrical plugs and motor mount bolts.

Alright, I promise I'll get back to the fender flares... this project just got hot...
I got super lucky and found a blown $500 motor on FB marketplace with a HESCO ALUMINUM HEAD.Bonus: It has roller rockers.
Machine work on the block and head is done. Going to stroke it to 4.6L and go with a Clegg's Stage 2 cam. Just gotta turn wrenches.
