  5. Jean Arthur and Edward G. Robinson in “The Whole Town’s Talking” (1935). Normally I find dual role pictures on the gimmicky side, but this one really works. Robinson is just terrific.

“If you think Jean has plumbed all her talent you're in for a big surprise in ‘Arizona’. She shows a bagful of new tricks”

  20. Last night's movie was #HowardHawk's 1939 film "Only Angels have Wings" about manly men risking their lives flying mail, supplies and people over and through the Andes in South America.

#CaryGrant, #ThomasMitchell, #RichardBarthelmess, and #NoahBeery are the manly men. #JeanArthur and, in her breakout role, #RitaHayworth are the Hawksian Woman Archetypes.

Great aerial special effects and stunt flying with the Hamilton H-47, Travel Air 6000, and Ford Trimotor planes as supporting actors.

  24. You Can't Take It With You (1938) is a Frank Capra movie so I approached it with grave misgivings. Watching it confirmed my suspicion that Frank Capra and I just don't get along.

And Lionel Barrymore and I definitely don't get along.

If you do like Capra movies this is a Capra movie on steroids.

  28. Saw 1942's "The More The Merrier" for the first time . . . but I never realized that "Walk Don't Run," which I've seen a dozen times, was its remake. Well, the remake was excellent, I now realize, and the premake was too. Jean Arthur has a physical comic brilliance, Joel McCrea is his usual agreeable self, Charles Coburn is no Cary Grant but is just fine, and George Stevens, of course, knows how to direct screwball.
