Day 20: A drama that made you sad or cry. #EYDC2025
#jDrama #cDrama #kDrama #twDrama
Lots of tears this year but two #jDramas share the honours:
First
After School Doctor for the raw emotional power of children acting out seriousl health issues meant my lacrimal glands were dry by the end of the show. Plenty of punch in this year's SP tooHonourable mention Asadora Anpan for the cutting short of a very soft, sweet, slow-burn romance as the intro to the misery of the war years eps

challenge for #CDrama and #KDrama viewers - when was the last time you watched an episode of either in which all the instrumental BGM was either ballet, opera or baroque? #JDrama #MysteryToIunakare I have really MISSED #JDramas like this!😍😍

2/27
2003
The original #JDrama Kimi Wa Petto is pretty much the archetypal specimen of what makes #JDramas unique.
It lost its nerve a bit at the end by opting for a more conventional relationship, but remains a great example of the quirky offbeat Japanese sensibility that doesn't fly in a #KDrama - which is why I have not watched (and will not watch) the #KDrama remake of this true J classic
-
@cs I went with 12 or so, but there really is no one right answer. Overall, I think the #JDrama #Dorama norm of 10-12 is the sweet spot, but some Dramas need more, and I've sat through 10 ep #JDramas feeling like they were never going to end. Then there's total runtime. Lots of shorter episodes versus fewer longer ones is whole nother question. So while I'm VERY STRONGLY a "less is more" kinda #KDrama #CDrama #JDrama viewer, the best answer is still "it depends" 😀

the 25 day #KDrama OST moved me to rewatch 2 favourite #JDramas - both starring Aragaki Yui . After finishing Full-Time Wife Escapist (5th) I ran a query to see which Dramas I've rewatched at least 3 complete times. Two each for #JDrama, #CDrama and #TWDrama - all reveal my brony nature, no #KDrama yet.
-
@liztai Wow! You have history 😄 I fell down the rabbit hole during the corona pandemic so that would be about 2020? I had become disenchanted with western series on American streaming services and was looking for something different…
#Kdrama doesn’t quite work for me because of my adoption hang up, which has more to do with me than with the quality of the dramas, I think.
I like some #Jdramas, too, but mainly like #Cdrama.
No logic, really 😃

Skimmed the obligatory (& repellent) "cute drunk" scenes in#KDrama "Serendipity's Embrace" ep1, now ep2 is turning me off with long scenes of the two female leads lingering over what is for me BY FAR the least appealing East Asian cuisine - Korean. I can't share their soup fetish, hate the idea of eating anything made with blood and so my K-food menu stops at tteokbokki, kimchi and fried chicken. #Cdramas, #TWDramas and #JDramas often get me salivating , #KDramas often get me FFing
-
10/10 for #JDrama Woman. Much of the storyline was predictable, but the delivery was outstanding - ESPECIALLY from Mitsushima Hikari and Suzuki Rio playing her daughter. I kept thinking while watching it how twee, maudlin and exaggerated the same show would be if done as a #KDrama This shone because like many #JDramas, it REALLY groks "less is more" - an accusation that can seldom be levelled at #KDramas
-
In the end I gave #KDrama Call It Love 6/10 for a solid 1st half. Deliberate, comtemplative & VERY unhurried. But then it just went SLOW. The lasting impression of the final half (apart from worrying if I would live long enough) was of someone who thought that filming in geologic time was "arty" or "deep"
Most of my favourite slower Dramas are #JDramas but there have been some very good slower #KDramas too - One Day Off, Check Out The Event, My Liberation Notes. This one? Call it SLOW

Yep, I'm sure there is a lot of misogyny in #JDrama. checking the JDramas I've dropped, that was a significant factor in many of them. But of the 17 #JDramas I've score at 9 or higher, 12 are unequivocally built around the female lead. Okaeri Mone, Orange Days and Neechan No Koibito are good examples

Halfway through "Kotaro Lives Alone" and it's an amazing example of all the reasons why #JDramas long ago became my favourites. Emotionally moving without sentimentality, addressing a difficult subject with unflinching directness and sensitivity, a lot of laughs and doing so in ten 23-minute episodes. Imagining #KDramas version is a frightening thought

Day 4
The #snowflakeChallenge2024 said to talk about myself.
https://fandom.ink/@SnowflakeChallenge/111715310405887399The first thing I remember wanting to be as a child is a #botanist because I looked it up in a dictionary and that's what they called studying #plants.
Next I wanted to be a #writer. Then I wanted to be a #dancer.
I am all of these and none of these. Now I call myself a #teacher but I don't want that alone to define me.
I am obsessive and fannish. Current likes are: #Jdramas, #kpop dance and #webcomics

@jillithd Actually, A lot of those very brony rewatches were close together and early in my Drama watching 'career'. There are many on that list I couldn't rewatch now, "My Only Love Song" being one of them.
It's fascinating to see how much my tastes have changed, and espceially how #JDramas have taken first place as my favourites. Rewatches now are likely to be of more substantive Dramas - not terribly dark as that's not me, but not so saccharine as my early #KDrama rewatches either
-
@EllenInEdmonton I just checked and found that my #JDrama rewatch percentage is similar to my #KDrama percentage, around 10% of the #JDramas I've watched. Curiously, #CDramas, which have by far the highest drop rate for me (53%), also have the 2nd highest rewatch percentage (~16% 6/38). #TWDramas win with 8/37, ~21%. Fun with stats😀

@jodmentum I feel you! I started in 2013, in recent years #JDramas have become my preference, and because I don't watch Dramas as they air these challenges are tough. Although I will easily be able to do the "Drama you dropped" entry 😀 #endofyeardramachallenge #kdrama #EOYDC2023 #KDramas

Thanks to @jillithd,
End of the Year Drama Challenge
Day 1: Since when have you been watching dramas?I know EXACTLY when - Monday May 13, 2013 was the day I watched my first ever K Drama, "My Princess". by Dec 2013, had seen 100 in 2014 I watched my 1st J-dorama, and they eventually became my favourites - K Dramas still lead quantitatively. The attached stats from my personal Drama watching database show where I'm at as of today.

Anyone know where I can view the My beautiful man - Eternal movie?
The release date in Japan was April 7. -
CW: Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories s1&2 (review), food
Unfortunately only two seasons are available on Netflix Nordic, because I'd gladly watch all five + some extra. The series is about love in all its shapes; love for friends, for old teachers, for one's job, and between, well, lovers. Every episode also features a dish of Japanese comfort food. Softspoken humour and very wholesome.
