Oh yes - I remember how teenage me sat in a long-gone record store and the lady running it (I was too young, but it was said all her customers were in love with her 😅 ) played that for me the first time. WHOAH! Then to find out those were merely his beginnings and starting to explore the rest of his discography.A favorite picture, by dear Guy Kopelowicz, "Spirits Rejoice" session, Judson Hall, NYC)

A year or so prior to his death, I spent a wonderful afternoon with John Tchicai, who stayed with a neighbour after a weird short gig (at a school nearby, with his longtime friend Giancarlo Nicolai). The neighbour couldn't pick him up and I was happy to oblige. We went for his luggage, got some pastries and then sat in my kitchen and he patiently answered all of the questions I could think up ... fondest memories indeed!

Also, today is Fred Thomas' birthday as well, he's the founder of Sam Records that released the glorious 2.5 LP package by Nathan Davis depicted above.

@ChrisMayLA6 I guess Pee Wee Ellis was the musical mastermind, not least behind "Cold Sweat" (which is an adaption of "So What") - but Maceo (on tenor back then) was such an unbelievably good soloist!
There's this incredible 1967 James Brown show from Paris that was videotaped, capturing JB's greatest band at its pinnacle:

Swinging into the weekend with the great Jutta Hipp. Alas, her "career" as a jazzer was short-lived (Leonard Feather - no matter his merits - was a pretty toxic dude in today's terminology, it seems).

Alas, yes! Not in my house, ever since I've heard "Land's End" as a teenager. Love his gritty tone! Took me longer to wrap my mind around his Coltrane-influenced later playing - but most notably the albums with Bobby Hutcherson have long been favorites now, as well! Also his Mainstream albums ... and a recent discovery here, his final (?) one, "Promised Land" (rec. 2000 w/Mulgrew Miller, Ray Drummond and Billy Higgins). -

Thomas Strønen was born on this day in 1972. HIs album "Bayou" with Ayumi Tanaka and Marthe Lea ranks highly in my recent ECM Records favourites. A very quiet, moody album that may need a few spins to let you discover its charms.
